Parker is due for his semi-annual vaccines this month. It's been a few years since I've had to think about this so I was just wondering what everyone has their horse(s) vaccinated for. I plan to do a 5-in-1 type (encephalitis, flu and tetnus) as well as WNV. I never remember having to worry about Potomac Horse Fever here in the past. And I know once a horse reaches a certain age, the Strangles vaccine is not really needed but I don't remember what that point is. Of course I will consult the vet when he comes out about what he thinks Parker needs but I thought it would be informative to open this discussion here (I know this topic has received a lot of attention on the other place). I know at least one of the associations I belong to now requires proof of specific vaccinations to go to their shows; I need to double check which ones. Will also check with the barn manager to see if they have any specific requirements.
Of course I have a full list of other things I plan on having the vet do including annual Coggins draw, checking teeth and cleaning Parker's sheath (this is the first gelding I've had that doesn't let me clean him) in addition to a few small things to ask about. Am I forgetting anything?

With the amount of horse traffic in our state I do what my vet suggests.... Both receive EWT and WNV. We don't do, have not done Potomac, Strangles nor Rhino/Flu. There have been some outbreaks but confined to the show grounds area 30+ miles away from me minimum. I do watch, listen and participate on local forums that concern various outbreaks of sickness mainly on the show circuit horses... We don't do rabies either as there has not been a confirmed case in so long in my area...but we watch and monitor "the gossip" happening.
Being in a boarding barn and showing atmosphere I might be vaccinating somewhat differently to further protect my horse from what arrives at a show or clinic or from someone trailering in and getting to close.

His former owner should have a list of shots he got and when.. go with that and have your vet review that list.. also perhaps rabies.. BUT do not inoculate all at once as a horse can go into shock from them.. and i f you want to save on a vet call than schedule the visit with another person to split the vet charge.. many of these shots you can give to save costs. you just need to know how much to give.. being in a show barn atmosphere where horses come and go you should give shots and practice good hygene, in other words no touching foreign horses than yours and of course no sharing of strangers your water bucket ..
