I am going to try selling baked potatoes at our local community market on Saturdays to make a little extra money (I know I'm not going to get rich doing this but every little bit helps). Currently I'm thinking about selling potatoes with the following options:
Plain/butter only Butter+Cheese+Bacon+Sour Cream Chili with or without Cheese Some kind of hot Broccoli and Cheese topping
Do you have any other favorite potato toppings?
I have an idea of what I am going to charge but would like to hear what you would be willing to pay for something like this. (I will certainly do the math to make sure I am not losing money on this)

At the equine affair i go to every year i get a baked potato for breakfast at 11 am and eat it while i am watching the trail challenge.. this is a good idea and you need to keep it simple and easy for you.. prep everything that morning. they have huge baked potatoes in a steamer or hot tray.. than the cheese sauce, bacon bits,, broccoli with cheese sauce. soft butter. chilie.. sour cream. chives. onions. olives. peppers that are fried. all in seperate trays like sub way the sandwich shop , and you can order any topping for your potato.. price of that bad boy with the works.. was 8 dollars.. i had the chili and sour cream with some brocoli cheese sauce and olives. well worth it as it kept me full all day..

Those all sound good to me! Can't think of any other combination at the moment. I know I like to get something like that, fast, easy, and not deep fried.
I agree with HL, somewhere around 7-8 dollars is usually what I expect to pay at one of those events for lunch, at least in NY anyway.

Thanks for the responses. HL - I may expand to more of that sort of "subway" style with more options if things go well.
I was thinking of charging $5 for a plain/butter and $6 for topped. I think the $7-8 would be a bit much at the market. Most ready-to-eat lunches are about $5 give or take.

I think your prices sound very reasonable. I would say that the most I would (depending on the size) but lets say for a large baked potato with toppings would be $7-8. I cant think of any other topping combinations other than the ones that you already listed.

Its great you can go and sell on your market to earn some extra money. Here you would get arrested as we cant sell nothing without giving bills.

I picked up most of my supplies today for Saturday. It is supposed to be 22* with 20 mph winds so I'm not sure how many people will be there. I will make sure to bundle up and layer, layer, layer!
I thought about also doing a Rotel/Cheese topping at a later date if this works out.
Still debating about the prices...

So I went ahead and cancelled going to market tomorrow. My mom spoke with the coordinator (my mom sells her purses there), most of the vendors had already cancelled, in fact the coordinator was thinking of just cancelling the whole thing for this weekend. I doubt very many customers would have ventured out in the weather (we aren't used to it being this cold here). Not to mention that it has been raining all day today so they are expecting the roads to freeze overnight.
Hopefully there will be room for me to go next weekend.

I plan on using two 6-foot tables, the kind that fold in half for easy transport. One will be between me and the customer and then one with all my supplies on it. I will probably have to do some tweaking once i set up. I will try to remember to take a few pics.

what are you using to hold or the fixings.?? and two tables sounds like a great idea.. make an el so you are in the middle and easy access to everything.. put all the fixings in front of you and the potatos that are cooked on the el part. ?/

That's how i was planning on setting up. The hot toppings will be in crockpots. The cold toppings in a cooler.

Things went really well yesterday. I sold 17 of the 20 potatoes I brought to the market. Sorry I forgot to get a pic but I'm hoping to go back on the 28th.
