We always went to some cousins' house for Christmas Eve when I was a kid and into my teenage years and my grandfather always played Santa Claus. I remember one year seeing his horseshoe boxers (I helped my grandmother fold the laundry a lot) and realized who it was. I was devastated.
We also have a tradition of my great uncle, and then later my grandfather, reading the Night Before Christmas but it is all messed up. It always started "It was the Chris before Nightmas". I videoed my grandfather telling the story one of the last years he was able to. I hold that video very dear to my heart now that he is no longer with us.

As a child Christmas Eve was a family party...I thought to celebrate Jesus birth but was really my aunts birthday party in honor of that. Her house always looked so perfect to me..like a fairy decorated it with twinkle lights of white...and a huge Christmas tree. So we gathered in our "finery" and spent the evening with my cousins in celebration and fun. Then we either went to our church or my cousins depending upon if my mom was with us or not. Mom was a nurse and worked evenings {4 - 12 midnight} and always some part of every holiday. I remember "sneaking" up the hospital staircase to her floor so she could see us all dressed up... Her boss was very old-school about no children allowed in the hospital for any reason, or any day except confined to their room if a patient. No exceptions!" Other than that... We, my sisters and I, helped with baking Christmas cookies with my mom. They were "dessert" to the Christmas dinner she prepared for us, my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins that came... ...and she gave some cookies away to friends of course. We went caroling bringing song and laughter to neighbors, friends, sometimes as a group {we were Girl Scouts} we went to hospitals, nursing homes, community centers spreading cheer....we had a great time. The holiday time was a time for family...for love to be shared with one and all. Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men..was something I was raised with and to this day live my life as such not just a few days a year that way. Merry Christmas to all my friends and family here on HA...
