I heard some loud noises coming from my pasture where the mares and foals stay during the day. The sound was like two stallions fighting like, this really loud and creep sound. I ran toward my horses because I thought some horse from my village got loose and came to my mares. When I came near them I saw my mares surrounding a cat and hitting the cat really aggressively with their front feet. I was shocked, I chase away the horses, but the poor cat was death. I never saw my horses act like that, or so aggressive toward any animal or human. I suppose the cat was near the foals and horses saw it like a predator. I dont't know. It was hard to watch. The cat had no chance.

Oh Lip, what a thing to see....
Your mares though were doing exactly what you want them to... Defend their young...
Mother Nature sometimes is cruel... I'm sorry you witnessed that part of the circle of life..

Oh Lip, I bet that was just horrifying to see. I agree, the mares were probably just defending their foals and saw the poor cat as a predator.

It is amazing how these domesticated animals, still have that strong wild instinct. The cat was small and sure did not have the attention to eat a foal. But they saw it as something with claws and teeth and had to protect.

Never heard of that... but i suppose they did feel it was a danger to the foal.. wonder if the cat was sick and the mares were just culling it.. so to speak.... check your horses and make sure there are no scratches.. my concern is rabies.
My arab mare killed a dog when her colt was a baby and the second dog got kicked and took off.. hubby buried the one dog.. asap.

I though the cat might be sick also. It is strange how such fast animal did not escape. Maybe it did had rabies and was attacking the horses. All 3 mares were hitting the cat with front legs and making those awful noices. They hit to kill for sure.

I have know horses who will kill dogs... I don't find it terribly surprising. I am so sorry you had to witness this and deal with the aftermath.

I saw dogs being attack by horses also. But never saw horses that agressive. They even got back when cat was death to kick some more and make sure it was death.
