He said she was only eating about 3/4's a bale of hay rather than a full bale. He said she was sure an eater that he didn't know where she was putting it. He said the ear was still looking good and her side was healing real good as well. He said his people were spoiling her as much as I had been. They put a lead on her and take her out in the yard to munch on grass when they get a chance.
He only called in case I was going to come up to see her because they were all going to the farm to work this after noon.

For me a bale weighs 65 pounds.... That is a whopping amount of hay for one so small to consume.... I wonder if Trixie isn't just plain "stuffed" with so much hay to eat.... My 1200 pound "ponies" would love to eat that but blimps they would be if I allowed that and pasture....whew, my saddle girth will never fit their fat belly!! So far, 10 pounds of hay a day and grazing 12 hours keeps them very round!
Glad it was a good update from the vet today dickel!

Humor from 80 years ago. His way of saying she was eating like a pig which would be from 50 years back maybe. Not sure of the PC terminology of today for eating well. graphics-3d-smileys-082254

I'm so glad she is doing well. I don't think I had a moment to comment when you posted the pictures. She really was beat up, poor girl. Set her up with some self-defense classes.

I went up to the clinic to visit Trixie this afternoon and took Bella with me to get a shot. Trixie was not all that crazy to see me. Doc had her in one of the maternity stalls and she wouldn't come up to me as usual. She stood still and let me come and pet her but when I would go to the other side of the stall and ask her to come to me she just looked at me. After I stayed at the other side of the stall for a while she came over to smell my hand but wouldn't get close. When I started to leave she did come to me and stuck her nose up for a kiss and a hug. Doc said she was afraid I was going to give her a shot and mess with her ear. Probly so.
Doc examined Bella and gave her a shot. When he listened to her heart and stomach rumbles he chuckled. When he was done he said you can sure tell the difference in how horses are handled. He had a large horse in the stocks and he said its heart was beating about 100 beats a minute and Bella's was slow. She didn't get excited with the commotion.

Any more updates on Trixie? An idea of when she will come home and how is that ear "graft" now??? No! I was behind on customers orders and had to run a machine at the factory the last three days and could not get up to the clinic. Doc calls me with any change and said he wanted me to let him keep her so he could watch it heal. He only charges 32.00 per day and removes the chance of another expensive surgery. I have faith that without a call that Trixie is on track. I will bring her home next week. I will get pictures after she is here. He has one little assistant that brushes her every day and has even filed her hooves. Her Dad is a pro heavy weight horse puller. I think I want to adopt her as another great grand daughter as she gets me a chair, coffee and a doughnut when I take a horse in.

Doc called me Wed. and said I could pick up Trixie on Friday. I went to the clinic this forenoon and the place was filled with riding horses. One had just been stitched up on the rear flank and another being led from the stocks to the trailer. An assistant had both hands full syringes headed to a large trailer with horse in it. After setting on my walker for 10 minutes or so the little young assistant said she would bring Trixie in for me. When she returned rather than bringing her to me she took her over to where Doc was giving a person instructions about his horse and I heard her say Trixie tore her ear lose again. The assistant said when I fed her two hours ago it was fine. Doc said I'll staple it back as soon as I can work it in.
After he stapled the bottom back of the ear together I brought her home. She was real happy to be out in the back yard. I had her on a long lead and she ran around me like she was being lunged kicking up her heals and bucking some. She would turn and go the other way and then run up to me. I have her tucked away in the horse trailer for the night.
Doc said if she pulls it apart again he will need to cut some off both sides of the slit and sew it back. I ask if he would be using 1/2" nylon rope to sew it back?
I took the two wormers I use and he said both were wormers he uses for his own horses but they will not work on bot. He said He would like to give me stuff for bot. He said he wants to give that before Thanksgiving. I never remember the names of meds but he said that giving this med to mares directly before and after breading they will abort the foal. He said if they are months along it would not cause a problem. I will have to go back up to get it.
Another cute tid bit on Trixie was the assistant said she would take Trixie out and load her for me. When she would start to put Trixie int the truck and she would pull away. After the second time I said, Trixie get in the truck so we can go for a ride. Trixie walked up the ramp all the way in and stood still until the doors were closed. As I started to fasten my seat belt she opened her mouth like she was going to bite my arm. I said No Trixie, you don't bite. She put her nose on my neck and rode home like a good girl. Just six months old and is so well behaved.

I was wondering how she was doing.. and seems that ear is going to be a problem... i wonder if not enough blood flow is getting to the mane part of the ear and it is not healing properly... My idea is to stuff that ear with a piece of plastic like pipe and wrap the heck out of it and than use the ears from a fly mask to keep it all covered.. i know hubby did that to a doberman that had her ear ripped apart in a fight and it worked fine..
and of course she listens to you .. after all you held her on your lap. the wormer is ivermectin.. you can get it in tractor supply and give it to the mares after first hard frost.. and again in february... and in march do a panacur. the dial on the wormer should be on 500 pounds.. and you should get two or three horses out of one wormer. i do for 600 pounds and have never had a problem they wind up spitting it out. so i am sure they get the proper amount that is needed.
