Thinking of getting one. I use round bales now and there is too much waste. Seems to have pretty good reviews...I can't see buying the hay rings because I know one of them would end up in the middle of it...This is a lot cheaper too. www.bigbalebuddy.com/bigbalebuddy.html

The only problem I can see with feeders of this type is that once they eat the hay done, the will end up stepping on it. Hopefully someone more familiar with this can give you some first hand knowledge. A recent seminar I went to had a lecture on hay and I remember them saying that with the tombstone ring feeder you can recuperate your costs within 2 months of owning it. And these seem like the horses can't get inside them as easily as a regular ring feeder. Here's a link to the exact study they talked about in the lecture. You can read it for yourself but in Figure 1, the feeder on the lower left is the tombstone which is what they ultimately recommend. www.journalofanimalscience.org/content/90/3/1047.long This is actually a good study for all of us to review. Good luck.

I've always liked those 'Hay Huts' because they seem well priced. I've also considered those Amish built round bale 'houses' but don't know their price. I just feed squares, so Zippy just gets a hay 'pile', nothing fancy

I wonder how well that would stand up to a horse who feels the need to "taste" and play with everything? I can totally see Zena trying to rip that thing open.

With my group if that were empty someone would be dragging it around and sleeping on it. namely a yellow horse i call Gold Rush i have the horse hay feeders that are metal and trust me they can not get into them that easy and i have 13 horses and two rings just munching away. and i have saved money and hay with the feeders. no waste no rot and no one pooping in the pile of hay.

HL... which shape top are your hay-rings?Flat or those pointed ones? Considering it for under the barn if the horses will get along and share nicely. If we need to separate them from each other due to squabbling...then they will each have slow feed nets, tubs,...something individual to occupy them and let them chow down at their leisure. And the fences added to make that a easier determination... individual paddock space. ..time will tell!

I put my R-bales under a car port I have. I took some 2x4's and blocked off the long sides of it .Mainly because they would go under it from the side and you could hear it scrapping there back. Never cut them but I didn't like it. Then I put pallets down one side of it and place the bale up against it. So far it has worked well. We are going to build one for the main field later on. I don't like the idea of the hay getting wet so I want a covered feeder. But I don't want to pay and outrageous price for one...

So far the bale buddy has held up well. I have no waste at all. I looked out today and it's down to the ground. So tomorrow we will put another bale in it. Will look at it and see if there is any damage to it. But so far I'm impressed with it..With 6 critters I go through a bale in 6 days.. Before when the bale got smaller MR JR would push it out from under the carport and waste most of it. So it's paying for itself so far...
