This seems to be a new trend and I find it interesting. Does anybody do this? Where would a person learn how? Are there any good videos or books? How would I get started?

I know a few people who do it. One is a trainer in the area who regularly has her horses appear on Heartland. I can put you in touch with her if you are interested. The other people I know who are involved are based out of Brooks and Seven Persons. As far as books and such go I'm not really sure what is all out there, but I know there are a lot of great videos on YouTube about it. It is really cool to watch.

I'd appreciate that information about her, thanks! A guy I know works on the Heartland set, I wonder if he knows her. I think the best way is by doing clinics. Videos help, too. Books are the hardest to learn anything about horses.

I think I would first do quite a bit of round pen work, working on "joining up" or whatever you want to call it. Then do some work just on getting him to follow you around the arena without a halter/lead. Maybe working on teaching hand/arm cues for what you want him to do (raise hands for back up, right arm out to go left (if facing him), etc.
Of course doing clinics or talking to a pro would be awesome!

Thanks MM. We've done those things for years other than he hand cues. I just can't think what else I'd want him to do. When I first took him over from Heather we did a trick training clinic because I wanted to bond with him on the ground, too. He hated it and was miserable and wouldn't cooperate. He's such a good guy but he loathes learning new things. It makes him really cranky. He's a happy horse who always has his ears up but try to teach him anything new and he's angry. That's why he's never done anything particularly well. He's a jack of all trades, he can and has done almost everything, but try to refine what he knows and he's annoyed and unhappy. Not only do the ears go back but he gets angry eyebrows. And he'll usually tighten up his chin like a big wrinkly walnut. And when you're riding him and try to teach him something new he tends to rear up. It's a trick he's been taught and if he doesn't know what you want he'll try that. On the ground if he doesn't know what you want he'll stick his feet out because he was taught to do the Spanish walk from the ground. It's also his go to thing if he doesn't know what to do. He's such a funny personality.
