Our regular farrier is not working right now as he had to have surgery on his knee so its going to be a few more months. He arranged for a back up farrier but he really only works out of the barn we're not longer at and I'm not a big fan of his trims. they're not bad but he doesn't believe in rounding the edges off. And I don't know if he'd come to where we are now so I've been checking into different farriers around here. There are ones that we've used before and we less than impressed with.
So, we're at the barn today and there's a farrier shoeing a coupe of horses. I asked if he had any bookings for after he was done or could he trim our two. Both are good with their feet and are quick to do. He said that yes, he could. I asked his price and he said $45 each. Our regular guy charges $35 but whatever, he was there and it made life easier to not have to shop around and try to find someone. So I check my wallet and only have $86 in there. Heather didn't have her purse with her. I messaged my hubby and asked him to come out with $4. I hadn't heard from him for a bit and the guy was still working on the other horses so I told him that I was waiting to hear back from my husband to see if he could bring me the $4 I was short so I might not be able to do it if I didn't hear back.
So he knows that I'm intending to pay cash. Lots of guys would have said not to worry about it but okay, whatever. So my husband finally shows up just before he's done with the horse he's shoeing and when I said that he's here the farrier says 'oh, that's plus GST, too'. GST is what we pay as a sales tax in Canada, it's 5%. So now I need another almost 5 bucks. It would have been great if he'd have mentioned that to start with in case that's all that Jim had brought. Luckily, he had a hundred dollar bill on him so he gave me that instead.
So the guy finishes with our horses. He does a decent job, nothing special but it's fine. I give him the $100 bill and he asks if I want change. I was pissed by this time because he'd argued with me over a chip on Heather's horse's hoof and because of telling me once Jim was there that it's another five bucks- actually 4.50- and with paying him cash he's not likely to declare it and is probably pocketing the cash. But maybe not, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. But do I want my freaking change?? Uh, yeah. I felt like he was there for two shoeings and got lucky and added another almost a hundred bucks worth of work in for another 20 minutes of work in one trip so he got lucky. If he hadn't had time I wouldn't have pushed him to do it. Yes, it did me a favour as well but it really left a bad taste in my mouth.
Am I being unreasonable? I've dealt with a number of crappy farriers over the years and at least he did a good job. I've also dealt with big mouthed, opinionated farriers and have no use for that, either. He wasn't lime that other than arguing with me about the chip. If he does a good job I'm happy but this guy really annoyed me. Am I being unreasonable?
