So there are friendly chickens where we board now. I'd like to give them some kind of a treat because they're looking for something and will peck at my fingernails. What's a good treat for a chicken?

Bread they love it. I give mine bread, egg shells, watermelon, strawberries. What ever they will peck at it. You can always get a small bag of cracked corn too.

Bring your kitchen scraps - they will love them. Oh, and left over cooked spaghetti is always funny, I think they think it's worms. If you bring egg shells, make sure they are crushed up. Of course make sure the owner is ok with you treating them. :-)

Great ideas you guys! Thanks! Egg shells sounds a bit disturbing but I'll try the other things. The BO doesn't care if we feed them. He got them because they're friendly. He never gets eggs from them because they hide them all over the place. One night he locked them up to see what would happen and there were four eggs there in the morning. They'll come strolling in the indoor arena and just hang out with the people and horses. It's kind of cool.

I took a piece of bread out there today and tore off little pieces for them. You guys are right. They LOVED it! Suddenly I was surrounded by four chickens trying to push each other out of the way to get at the bread. I had brought it in a baggie and a couple of hours later I was picking up the plastic bag I'd brought with me and they all ran over when they heard the plastic bag. They're smarter than I thought! It was fun feeding them. I've lived in the country and been to friend's places in the country since I was a kid but I've never fed a chicken. These ones are kind of a buff colour and look very neat and tidy. I'm going to take them something every time I go out!

Fun! You can probably get them to eat out of your hands pretty quickly. It doesn't hurt but will pinch some if they get you rather than the treat. But I bet you already have new friends for life.

I find chickens very relaxing, simply sitting on a bucket and chick-chicking treats now and again. I always end up with one or two who will let me pet them or even carry them around lol If you like to eat it, so will they :-)

They already eat of our hands. It's a kind of cool feeling. I haven't seen them for about a week. We've had a lot of rain. Maybe chickens don't like walking around in mud?
There two tiny white ponies with beautiful little faces like miniature arabs. They're sweet and love attention. Also a mini donkey that used to live at the last barn we boarded at who is in foal and will have a baby in about a month. Her last colt became good friends with Prince. They'd touch noses when Prince would hang his head over the fence and the baby would just hang around with him on the other side of the fence.

nhg - just the "tone" of your posts makes it obvious how much you are enjoying your new barn! I hope you and Heather are getting out there as often as possible to play with Prince and Fox.

Thanks MM. We are loving it. We have yet to run into anyone who is a drama queen or who thinks they're all that when it comes to horses or who is judgemental or figures they need to tell everyone what to do. I'm sure there will be someone who's like that but we haven't seen it so far. Everyone is courteous and positive. The BO is an older guy who says his boarders come first and anyone who causes issues is told to leave. He let someone we know who is a PIA to come in and ride and it sounds like she won't be back. If you read this AES its the woman we both know that required special rules at your old barn.
We're the happiest we've been in a long time. The last barn was okay but I always felt like we could find something better. The problem was that there are barns around with indoor arenas that are more expensive but not worth the extra cost. The place we are now is cheaper than the last place and so much better it's not a comparison. A couple of weeks ago we were out there and our previous BO showed up with her annoying friend who lives and boards at the old place. They walked around looking around and we could hear her friend cackling away. The next day the BO kind of lowered the price of her board. She put it back to what it was last year so not much of a drop. I sometimes wonder if I should tell her why we love the new place so much and what we didn't like about her place. Maybe it would help her out. But she'd have to redo and build so much she'd never spend the money so I'm not sure there's any point. I can't imagine that she can't see the difference in her place and the new one.
The new place has better fencing and the horses have shelters. There's an indoor arena that's about 3 times the size of hers. Also an outdoor and another outdoor that has extreme trail obstacles up all the time. The pens are set up so the horses can be seen even from a ways away so if one had an issue someone can easily see it. Her pens have a lot of vertical windboards so a person has to go right up to the gate to see if a horse is okay. When I was in the hospital and Prince hurt himself Heather thinks he was bad for a few days before she discovered it. So does the chiro. But nobody noticed or said anything. He was lying down a lot in the winter. A horse can freeze to death here in Canada by doing that. Her pens are dirty and low so when it rains they become mud swimming pools. I often found pieces of glass and broken ceramics in the pen Prince used to be in in the dirt where his hay was. I was told 'well, it's an old place and there's lots of stuff lying around'. The footing in the arena was too deep so it was actually hard to work your horse. And while the arena had heat you had to call ahead to have it turned on in the winter and if it was only one person they didn't want to do it. The indoor arena was also very small. Hard to have two horses doing circles at each end at the same time. The new one could have four. We have tack lockers now- huge ones- but had everything in a big tack room there that never got swept or cleaned unless a boarder did it. I did it a few times.
Anyway, that was long. Yes, we're very happy now.

In my opinion you are happy with the new facility and if your old owner can not see the difference in her place and the one you are at.. than it is not for you to explain why you left. she could see all is neat and looking like a horse facility with things out and about for riders. as long as you are happy and your horse is happy that is the most important thing.

Yup, we're still more than happy with where we are now. And it's just going to get better and better as he builds more things and finishes things off. He's a nice guy, too. I like his sense of humour.

Meal worms! Chickens love them! Otherwise like others have said vegetable/fruit peelings work great.
