Rusty had been having a problem with his left rear leg with pain. He still went out and followed me baling hay on three legs. He was not able to jump up on my lap this morning when trying. I dissolved two ibuprofin in milk this morning and at lunch I mixed it with ice cream and gave it to him. I was going to look it up on the internet this morning but run out of time. I eat a quick lunch after giving it to him and looked it up. POISION to dogs. I called the vet and he was out of town. The assistant told me to give him peroxided and when the vet gat back then bring him in. The vet called the office and they relayed that I should take him to Fort Wayne IN. I called the Horse vet and he said since it had been over two hours since Rusty had taken the iburopfin and I had already given him the peroxided to give him Pepto and take all food away and give him only oatmeal for a few days. The internet says that dogs will not show systems right away. They will bleed out internally. I think trying to help him deal with the pain has killed him. He is only seven years old but has never been hurt. He just started limping now and then when outside and it was getting to where he limped every time he was out with me. He seems to be himself now.

I sure hope he is ok,,, i give mine ibupropen all the time and never had a problem,,, perhaps what they mean as bleed .. it might make their blood to thin. you can give a dog bute... just a tiny piece will work.. and better still have the vet look at that hind leg.. and perhaps recommend rymadal or derramax which is the best. good luck and just give him a hug.

How scary dickel. I would keep a close eye on him and if anything looks off, bring him to the vet or emergency clinic.

Dogs are safe to have aspirin or dog drugs. No Tylenol or Advil/Ibuprofen/Motrin.... wag finger
Dickel...sounds like the dog is tearing his cruciate ligament, aka "ACL". There are 2 of them...front and rear. Surgery can fix it and then just some time to recuperate from the procedure. It will continually get worse till it completely tears and the leg is useless and unusable...then you will be forced to make some decisions on what to do. Knowing that there is a problem with the one hind leg then puts added stress and strain to the other hind limb....in turn weakening and possibly injuring the "good" limb...
Now, how do I know all this... My lab tore his totally and had experimental surgery with a new device. He did great once healed. His stride was slightly different on that leg but otherwise he was great!!
Good luck with your pup....

Rusty seemed normal when we did chores this evening. Very little limping. He even went back n the field mouse hunting and had to be called sternly to come back. He eat his oatmeal right down and wanted more. I will give him more before we go to bed and hope for the best in the morning.
Thanks for the replies. I have been sick over doing such a dumb thing.

Yes, that is exactly how it goes... Sore and 3 legged, then a few hours later running and playing hard using the limb..
IF you can restrict his activity to quieter things it might help, but the damage I bet is done and it is a matter of time till that ligament tears apart. He is slowly tearing it now, when a new piece goes he goes lame till he acclimates himself to the pain. Dogs have a high threshold of pain...
Hope my thoughts are very wrong but a gut feeling you deal with a time-bomb on that leg...sorry. smileys-sad-593832

How is Rusty doing dickel..? We woke this morning to three blood spots where Rusty had throwed up on the floor. The blood was black rather than red. I gave him more Peoto and then gave him a enema. He needed that for sure and after was walking around with his tail up rather than tucked down. I brought him ice cream when I came home at lunch and mixed it with yogurt. He eat it right down. I then gave him another small amount and he eat that quickly as well. While I eat my lunch He had his feet on my chair begging. Dixie is fixing him some boiled ground turkey for supper time.

dickel....you might want to get in touch with your vet about that....
Dogs don't normally throw up blood unless there is something else going on. A holiday weekend fast approaching.... Me, I would make a phone call about my dog and what it could be...

... Yes, The vet told me that he would bleed out in the stomach or get better. The old 82 year old mainly horse vet now said spending a bunch of money wouldn't help. I called the pet vet and he was out of town. When he called in he told his office to tell me to take him to Fort Wane for critical care. I had already talked to the horse vet who still doctors pet for horse owners. He has not throwed up since in the night and has eat three times this afternoon. He met me at the door for his hug and back rub with his tail wagging. From what we have read on the subject he would have already died or not be moving around much. For where he is now under dogs with stomach ulcers it says to feed bland foods in small amounts to let the stomach lining heal. He is as active in the house as he is normally.

Sounds like you covered the issues well and Rusty is holding his own... Now for some time to heal his innards...
Glad Rusty is doing better.

Rusty woke me up at 1:30 this morning to go out side to pee. Dixie has bad leg screaming cramps at 2:30 and when I was trying to help Rusty was on his back legs with his front on the bed going back and forth with his ears up. At seven this morning he ate about a table spoon of oatmeal that he had not eat just before we went to bed last night. He did it on his own. Dixie gave him about a half cup of yogurt and pumpkin mix at about 8:30 and he ate it all. While doing chores Dixie fixed my breakfast of sausage and eggs. Rusty set and begged as usual and I gave him some of my eggs which he ate. I took him out before I did chores and he peed a lot and it was not dark. I didn't let him go with me to do chores because his desire to rummage thru the road apples. That is another funny story to tell on Rusty later. Oh, he also had to set on Dixie's lap for over 15 minutes which he has not done for a while. Seems he is past the critical stage. Sometimes these old 80 year old vets are not as behind as the new pet Vets would like you to think.
