I have two round bales of hay that is infested with red ants . Will the horses eat it and will it cause any problems ?

Are they just regular ants and not fire ants? If fire ants I would get rid of it. Take it some where and burn it. Then look to see if the ants are anywhere else. I have never seen ants in round or square bales. I would not be feeding it. To be on the safe side.

If the bales are fully infested, I doubt the horses will eat it. Have you had a lot of rain lately? I suspect they found a nice dry, safe place to live and are now taking over like they do. I know it's hard to through out "good" hay but again, I doubt the horses will bother with it.

It would seem to me that something would have had to be rolled up in the bale that would draw the ants. Like a dead animal maybe. I have found snakes and rabbits in bales many times but never ants. With some of the larger hay machinery it could have larger animals rolled up inside. Different types of ants and conditions in different areas of the country. I wouldn't feed it though.

Hubby came up with an idea .... We have mounds of bull ants here since they eat fire ants he thinks we should put the hay on the mounds and let nature take its course . Hopefully it will work I can't afford to buy hay right now those are suppose to last until June.I have one good bale hopefully the plan works .

ME PERSONALLY would not feed that to the horses. perhaps goats and cows,, why risk having the horses get sick and than have to worry about a vet bill. call the person you got the hay from and tell him. or did the bales get the ants while at your place.?? sounds nasty..

Oh my Good, dead animals in a round bale?? uhhh, lucky I have my own hay and packed in smaller cubes. Never hurd of ants in hay or straw. Good luck lol.
