I'm going to guess part pit bull, but it's just a guess. I love his brindle coloring, though!

When I went to the shelter, I asked for a dog least likely to be adopted. Pit Bull, black, older, one who really needed to be chosen. They brought me this cute 6 month old brindle boy. I was like, seriously, this is one who is least likely to be adopted? They insisted that he fit my request. They put his breed down as Plott Hound mix. Had to look Plott Hound up, never heard of it before. Is the state dog of North Carolina. On the second day home, he got loose and ran next door. I was told to keep my f'in pit bull out of his (the neighbor's) yard. I had wondered if the people at the shelter had called him a Plott so he wouldn't have the stigma of Pit Bull. I have seen them list Pit Bulls and I had said I would be happy to get one, so it doesn't seem like they would feel the need to list him differently. He just doesn't have the build or head of any hound I've seen. I don't care what he is, I love him regardless. He's just the type of dog I think it's fun to ponder on.

He may have some Rottweiler in him... He has the balance of body proportions I see in Rotties. He possibly is some Pit or some Chocolate Lab in him too with those eyes colored...almost a hazeling in them {greenish tinge} known for in certain breed traits. Large chested, lighter boned legs, the ear shape, the longer nose/muzzle.... Hound dog is in this one!
I have a chocolate lab and hound mix female myself. {she's seen in some photos} Ashely also came from a rescue but she and her litter mates were a owner surrender so the parentage were seen.. Very smart dog, great watchdog as always on alert and the most loving dog, unless she not know you or you not belong, her growl will make ALL quickly step back. Now Plott hounds are very common in my area...great for feral pig hunting and are also great family dogs.. My dog does not "howl" as some hounds can, thankfully, but has a deep chested sounding bark of a dog much larger than her. She is a natural tracker, hunter and does that pointing thing with her foot when she "sights" something... She is lightening fast too when she takes off after something, stalks too as real hunt dogs do to flush out prey...
Have you looked at what a Plott hound is by breed standards.. I just did. That dog of yours is Plott Hound if ever there was one!! Check this site information out and see if your dog doesn't fit the "norms" of the breed. www.dogbreedinfo.com/plotthound.htm
Regardless of what "blood" is in him, he is beautiful and a keeper. smilie dancing
ENJOY!!

Here are some "today" photos of my Ashley {brown dog} and Shadow {yellow lab}....Excuse the mess seen in the photos, this was a quick photo op!!} Ashley....lab-hound mix. If you look closely you can see the "flecking" in her coat, the cross over her shoulders, tail-set, shape of the ears and flat of the skull, the white of the feet and barely can make out the webbing of her toes... She is not "huge" but 60 pounds of solid muscle and grit... Your dog has many of the same traits as mine...

This is our dog Bella. We had her DNA'd and she's mostly Rottie/Staffie (pitbull) with a few other breeds thrown in. I think they look very similar. Your guy is really a handsome dog and good for you for suing that criteria to adopt him!

hl4l, that is the site I looked at first! Probably one of the best on Plott Hounds. That first pic is the face of a hound for sure! Looks nothing like Jordan. SnoopDogg is closer, but the ears are definitely longer. The only real likeness I can see is the same brindle color. Sorry, I just don't see it. If there is Plott in him it has to be a definite mix. nhg, your girl is a cutie! I would feel that way even if she didn't look so much like a younger Jordan! How old is she, how much does she weigh? Jordan is a solid 90lbs these days. Now, not then. He was closer to 40 then.

I think she's about 6 now. She weighs 65 pounds. She's a little thicker now than she was in that picture.

Jordan definitely has more weight, but that face, those eyes. When I first looked at the pic it was like looking at a younger Jordan. Just wow.

Your first picture of his face was like looking at Bella. They look quite alike. I wonder if he has some of the same breeding. I remember one of the breeds she has in her to a small degree is Bernese Mtn Dog.
She's a great dog. Gets along great with other dogs, isn't pushy, just a good dog. Downside is she seems to think she's the designated guard dog of the house and she barks at people she can see outside. Not constantly but she does spend too much time looking for something or someone to bark at.

Part of what I am concentrating on now is getting Jordan into the truck. The best I got was, one time, he had both front legs in. Basically he just lays down. Very passive, I'm pulling lightly on and off on the leash, talking positively to him, giving treats for progress, everything I know. Even when it looks like we're making progress he'll end up just laying down and looking at me. He gets looked at and gets shots when the vet is out for the horses spring stuff. Exam, teeth, vax, etc. Haven't been able to get him around many dogs this way. He's always done great with, the few, we've had. Anybody know training tips on getting a dog in a vehicle? At 90lbs, not cooperating lbs, I cannot pick him up.

Maybe he needs some sort of steps to get in and out? Sorry, the only dogs I've ever owned loved getting into the truck.

I don't know why but I see a greyhound in him and a pitbull-mastif.

The only time I had envisioned a problem would have been sick or injured, not refusal. At this time I am, absolutely "downsizing". I love large dogs, but I can't have anything over 50lbs, preferably between 40-45lbs. I need to be able to lift, to carry if nesaccery I did have Holly jump into the truck, in front of Jordan and call to him from next to her (Holly). Did not seem to affect him at all. Animals can have bizarre phobias. Perhaps he's afraid of jumping up, the steps, or a ramp may be the answer. Definitely worth a try. I'm going to try having him jump into the horse trailer; not quite as far up and not into a small space. I don't think there's any claustrophobia involved, or he wouldn't go in his doghouse, right?

Nothing positive to offer about breeds, it's kind of fun to google all of those breeds, never heard of Plott Hound. Love that name. Plott. lol As puppies they're all plott hounds aren't they lol
I gotta say, those short haired, highly muscled dogs look intimidating to me, I'm slowly getting over the auto-response as I've met a few, read about them, you guys share about yours, so the education continues. I was "raised" with German Shepherds so they don't "scare" me lol So reason has nothing to do with it :-)
