When I was on my way home yesterday, I saw a little dog in the ditch about 1/4 mile away from my house. I stopped and tried to coax it to me, but it kept running down the road. Once it got to a clear spot, it ran off through the field and down into the dry creek bed. I got the car off the road ad tried to find the little thing, but couldn't. I went out all evening and called to it and looked, and went out when I woke up in the middle of the night too. I hoped the poor little thing found it's way home and wasn't freezing, in the night or being eaten by a coyote.
This afternoon I saw that the horses were really looking at something, so I ran outside just to check. Sure enough here she was just across the fence. She ran when she saw me so I ran for a bowl of dog food. It took awhile, but eventually I was able to coax her inside the fence and close the gate.
I put her picture on my FB page, so if her owners see it they will know she is safe and warm. She had on a collar, but no tags. I'll get her scanned for a chip tomorrow.

You're a gem diamond...
This girl is so blessed it was you who saw her and made the effort....she is now safe, fed and going to survive the cold weather!
She is cute...looks like maybe a Toy Fox Terrier... or some Boston Terrier in her. kisses

I do hope the owners come forward, but I am not willing to just drop her off at the Humane Society and leave her there. It still breaks my heart that I know she spent at least one bitter cold night, on a cold lonely creek bank, all alone. Hopefully she has loving owners somewhere, but if not she will just stay here.
She goes to the bathroom outside, and she is smart. She has learned that if she goes Pee Pee out side she gets a treat. I'm not sure if she learned that from me, or if Buster and Candy taught her that. Anyway, she has figured where to run, and wait until I get there to give them all a treat.
Hopefully she will sleep well tonight. She hasn't informed me of where she expects to sleep. Buster sleeps in his kennel, or on the sofa. Candy sleeps with Honey. I sleep with 4 or 5 cats, so we will just have to wait and see how things end up.
Good night. I hope. smileys-sleeping-245353

She is cute but she poops on the floor. Little stinker. I guess I will have to kennel her at night, and keep a closer eye on her, when I am here. So far I haven't heard anything from FB. I'll take her to the vet in a bit to be scanned, for a chip.

I took Katie to the Vet to be scanned, and she had no chip. When I got home I called the humane society and let them know we had her. Maybe only 20 minutes later we got a call from her frantic owner. It seems....
Katie's family is having a baby any day. They didn't feel like they could keep her, and have time for their new baby. Katie does have accidents on the floor, and was kept in a kennel most of the time. Her family had their carpets cleaned to make things better for the new baby, and didn't want Katie to ruin them again. Unfortunately, Katie hates to be in a kennel. With all the crying and yelping, they were sure she would keep the new baby awake, so they gave her to Mom and Dad.
Mom and Dad, (we actually know them) had only had Katie for a few days, when she escaped. That was Saturday. Dad and a friend drove around for hours looking for her, and when it got dark, they were out in back yards with flashlights looking through bushes, when the police stopped them to ask what they thought they were doing. Dad is a retired police officer, and explained the situation. Dad thought he had reported a missing dog to the police, but since the police were actually investigating suspicious activity, not a lost dog, the information didn't get passed along.
Anyway as soon as they found out we had her they came right out. Linda was explaining about how they had come to have little Katie, and how this was all very new to them, and they really didn't want to have a dog because they travel all the time, and she hated to stay in her kennel, and she cried all the time, and Linda was just sure the little dog had died after being out in the freezing temps all night, and was just sick about it, and that she was so grateful that we had taken her in and kept her warm and fed. Then Honey spoke up, saying if they didn't want her we would be happy to give her a good home. So.........
Katie has a new home, and will be going to the vet tomorrow for dental work, a microchip, and her shots.
And we will all live happily ever after.....
The end

I am just so thankful she survive the night in the cold.
She really does love life outside a kennel. I haven't locked her up, except for when I kept her behind the baby gate, while introductions were being made. She really hated that. She did seem a little torn when Linda left her here with us. It was like she wanted to go, but I just called her to me and she was ok with staying here. I'm sure it will take her a little time to adjust. First of all she won't have to be in a kennel all the time. The second thing is, she needs to learn to keep her feet off Abbys cage. A dog could loose a toe that way. I have told Abby to be gentle, but she is a bird, and doesn't always mind.
They will all learn, eventually.

Aw, what a happy, happy ending!!! Bless you and honey for taking her in and giving her a good home.
And she will learn the ways of your household. Perhaps since you are home quite a bit you can eventually teach her to poop outside.

We got a couple of poops outside yesterday, but she left a deposit on the floor while I was at work this morning. I am sure she will get it right eventually.
I'm not sure what it is about her, but it was really love at first sight for me. I wouldn't admit it before, and was really willing to do the right thing to find her owners, but I am glad things worked out, for us to keep her.
I have to take her to the vet tonight, so she will be there first thing in the morning, for her dental work. I really hate that, but I will be at work in the morning, so she has to go out tonight. The good thing is I will be able to bring her home tomorrow, as soon as she wakes up.
I will really be glad to get her teeth fixed. I see her work her jaw after she bites down on something, so I know they are hurting. I was wondering if I should give her a week to adjust, to her new home, before having it done, but I think she will have a better adjustment if she can be more comfortable. That way she can get used to a new home, a new life, and new teeth.

I think you are doing the right thing by taking her to the vet. Once she feels better she can adjust to everything at her new home. You are an Angel Diamond - with all you have been going through with your own health - to take in another creature and put their needs before yours -

Carshon, I think of her as more of a blessing. She has gotten my mind off of me, and totally involved in doing something productive, rather than feeling sorry for myself. It was really hard to leave her at the vet. She is scared, and has no idea what is happening to her. I can pick her up tomorrow after 3:00, then we can get started on having a happy new life.
I visited a little with her Grandma today. She doesn't sound like she is very happy with her former owners care of her. Well that's all behind her now, and tomorrow we will be on our way to becoming an even bigger family.

A few days after coming home she will have forgotten all about the dentist and how scared she was. she will be fine in her new home with a new happy life.

What a lucky girl to have landed softly with you! It could have been a very different ending for the poor thing had you not found her. I am sure she will come around with the house training soon.

I picked Katie up today at 3:00, from the Vet. She got all excited when she saw me, so that made me feel good. They didn't have to pull any teeth. Once they got all the scale off of them her teeth looked really good. As soon as she got home she got right back into her routine. Go outside go potty, come in get a treat, then sit on my lap or curl up in a chair in a blanket. She doesn't seem to be upset at all, and is eager to learn a new way of life.
I am not against kennel training, but keeping a dog in a kennel for 9 to 10 straight hours, is not good for their mental health. That has been Katie's life for the last few years. She was in her kennel all day, then out for a few hours, then back in all night. She probably spent almost 20 hours a day in her tiny kennel.
She has only been in a much larger kennel two times since she came to live with us, and that is only because I discovered her car manners are horrible. It is very hard to drive with a dog trying to sit on your shoulders, so to make the trip to the vet safer, she had to ride in her kennel. As far as I am concerned, she has spent all the time she needs to locked in her tiny prison, and she deserves to be free, to live her life without bars. So far we haven't had a problem, and I really don't expect to.
She is an amazing little dog, and I am so lucky that God has allowed me to me a part of her life.
