Honey had been begging me for another dog. One day when I was bringing him home after a dental appointment, I finally agreed to at go by the Humane Society and at least look. He wanted a tiny Chihuahua, or a bull dog. I pleaded with him to consider a reasonable dog. Lucky for me the only tiny Chi was already spoken for and they rarely have a bull dog. I spotted Candy, and asked if he could look at her. She came running out of her kennel, and when he reached down to pet her she wrapped her front legs around his arm and wouldn't let go. When he straightened up she held on. He handed her to me, and wanted to see the other little Chi. He has no animal sense at all, and the other poor scared little dog nearly bit him.
We got him away from the little dog, and I handed Candy back to him, and told him, "this is your dog."
She is truly a wonder. She sits in his lap all morning while I am at work. She is house broke. She talks to him. He thinks she follows him into the bathroom just to watch over him.
Right now I am taking her through training so when she is all done, she will be a registered emotional support service canine, and she will be able to go everywhere with us.

Candy is the little chocolate dog napping on Busters butt. I can't believe how amazing she is. It's like she knows she is his service dog, and she is totally willing to play the part. I have had to spray him with cat nip to get the cats to spend any time with him, and I was spraying his chair with adaptil for dogs to get Buster to spend time with him. Candy knows. She is supposed to stay with him. I just locked her in his room for the first three weeks, and I totally ignored her. Now she is his dog. She does come to spend time with me, and loves her obedience training, but all I have to do is tell her to go to daddy, and off she goes to sit on his lap. She is a great dog.

Oh, how sweet! Sounds like my Brodie dog. My husband and I play argue about who Bride loves more and who's dog he is and stuff like that. He's okay with dogs but never fell in love with one. He sure loves Brodie, though. And Brodie loves him.

Another good thing she does for him, is she makes him get up, and let her out. It is her, self appointed job, to patrol the wood pile for rodents. She has to patrol every couple of hours. She has even caught a few. I think she is a better mouser that the cats.

It is amazing how a dog will pick one person and those shelter dogs are so loving and appreciative of a home and human touch and companionship. good for you and Candy

Years ago I trained several dogs in 4-H. We even did a lot of AKC showing, in both confirmation and obedience. Our local 4-H has been offering community dog training, for several years, but there hasn't been a lot of takers.
My sister adopted a little terrier cross a few months ago, then my niece adopted a chiwienny??, then we adopted Candy. We all three thought it would be fun to train our dogs, with the 4-H kids.
Last Tuesday we went to training class, and there were 6 adults, with dogs including me. I have been working with Candy. My Sister-in-law is the community dog trainer, and knows this. Our lesson was to just start on the heel and sit.
Candy gets all excited with all the dogs moving around, and was acting pretty silly, but that is why it is so important to work together in a large groop. So the dogs can learn to calm down in an exciting setting.
When we finished our lesson SIL wanted to show the others, some of the things we would be working on, in the weeks to come. Candy knows the sit and stay, and the down and stay, and I was confident enough in her to even leave her, off leash, and walk 10 feet away, while she stayed where I told her to.
We have just started working on the recall, but I thought we could go ahead and give it a try, with the leash. She did it perfect. When I called her she ran right up, and sat in front of me, and when I told her to heel, she shot to my left side, and sat right down. I didn't really even use the leash at all. I just kept her from getting all tangeled up in it.
She is the smartest little thing.
Who knows. My Sister, Niece, and I might all enter the community dog show in the county fair this year.

What a cutie! She sounds like a wonderful find! It's amazing the wonderful, sweet, smart dogs that you can find at the shelters that someone else has just thrown away. I'm so glad you, honey, and Candy all have each other now. I can't wait to hear more about how her training goes to be a service dog. Sounds like she's off to a great start!
