Note***** This tekst is mine(only parts of tekst), and was written in croatian. As it would take me forever to translate it , I used google translator to make it faster, so maybe some words will be little bit funny.
I often think about various things about horses and write it down, I would like to share one of my tekst about horse inteligence and would like opinion of others on same subject.
There is an old proverb that says that horses are certainly intelligent because they do not do not bet on people. )) How much are they really intelligent? One famous rider said "not very smart because he would not allow a man to sit on their back for one second". No doubt their willingness to cooperate with people arouses the impression that they are not so smart, because that attitude for centuries brings all sorts of troubles in their favour. However, the willingness of the horse to suffer to be exploited is actually part of their natural behavior as a member of the herd. They are very social animals and so willingly obey the dictates of thir own kind that we should not be suprised by their villingness to obay to people.
Intelligence is the ability to use previous experience in dealing with new problems. For the possession of intelligence it requires good sense organs that would be used to obtained information of the surroundings, it is required to have complexed brain to combine separate memories while searching for the solution of new problems .
In the wild, the species that belong to animals that serve as prey and species that live as predators and hunters are somewhat different from the others by "style" of intelligence. If a predator makes a mistake, and because his prey escape, he will survive and continue to hunt, but if pray makes a mistakes and end up hunted(for example a horse) it will die.
Because of that such animals are particularly sensitive to the experiences that have been linked to pain and death. If the horse suffers trauma, he will remember it for years.
A series of results consisted in the fact that the horses were shown to various geometric shapes, such as circles opposite rectangle or triangle opposite the row of dots, with the prize in the form of treats, if given only to select the default character. Horses very quickly learn to choose specific, correct characters. When the horses were thus offered twenty pairs of characters, they quickly learn to choose the right and correct results. Their lowest percentage was 73 percent accurate hits in each attempt. .After rest of 20 month, horses were still giving correct results witch shows hw good memory the have.
Memory is of vital importance to know and remember a large number of plants that grow in horses surroundings in wild, to know exactly what taste good, which have a nasty taste and wich are toxic.
The ability of horses to distinguish and recognize the finest ambient indicators proved the famous "clever Hans" which performed in front of an audience like a horse that can count. It was claimed that this horse can perform simple mathematical operations. He would kick on a floor the correct number. His trainer would have asked how much is 2 times 3, Hans would answer with six strokes of hooves. The audience was stunned. To solve this puzzle a group of researchers set to work to solve this mystery. They were looking for a trainer to leave thinking trainer gives secret hints to Hans .When they removed a trainer, smart Hans was still giving the correct answer to each installed equation. Then they alienated the audience, and Hans was left behind a curtain so that he does not see what is going on in the audience. Suddenly he stopped to give accurate answers. Hans was able to notice subtle changes in facial expressions of people who watched him as he tapped his answers and he guessed when he was approaching the correct answer by observing.
In any case, intelligence is a relative term, we can not compare the intelligence of humans and animals and say that animal is dumb because they do not think like human. Each animal is smart for the purpose of its existence and its necessity for survival.
