I've posted my thoughts on the walking horse world in the southeastern states where they take it seriously and have the big lick horses. I hate seeing the two year olds with their big kleg shoes being ridden by fat men while they clamber around the ring like in injured insect. All the while the crowd hoots and hollers like they're at a dog fight and are probably the same caliber of participants. Well, it's in the news again.

My question is this. Can these horses last into old age or are they ruined? Could a person rescue one of them and have a good horse once their stupid big shoes are taken off? Or do they end up being put down young because of the abuse? I've heard that they will even keep those crazy shoes on all the time, rather than let them off time without them, OMG...
As I've mentioned before, we boarded at a TWH breeding stable for almost fifteen years. I owned one and my friend bought him so I still ride him sometimes (within the last week) and have ridden many. Horses in Canada are not sored and cannot be shown if they even show signs of having been sored in the past. So a person couldn't buy one from the states that has old soring scars and show it here. But what happens to them? We all know how racehorses that don't do well are disposed of. Show horses don't last long because of the early hard training and are sometimes sent to slaughter just so the owner won't have to compete against them in the future. But what happens to the TWHs?
I saw a video the other day on facebook that was posted by a horse hauler who was horrified that they had to haul a horse across several states to a new owner who had bought the horse based on pictures. She had a terrible back end, her rump was caved in and totally lacked muscles and one back foot was completely collapsed at the pastern so the fetlock actually touched the ground. They didn't say but she looked like a walker to me.
