Just one more thing. -sigh- I need a break from life. My first hoof abscess that is draining out the top (coronary band). What are your experiences with these? Vet could not find a draining tract in the bottom of the hoof. He does have some good bruises though. B was off, then more sore yesterday and very sore today. I have not been out nearly as much as normal because of my own health issues. B did have another hoof abscess in 2013, but that was from the flood in CO. Vet gave him exceed and will do a repeat dose in five days. He is also getting bite (2 grams SID). I am going to be soaking his hoof once a day in iodine/Epsom salt and we are also wrapping with a espom salt poultice.

I have had abcess blast thru coronary band, you will not see a hole in the bottom. it is infection. now for the duck tape take it off. that does not circulate air and germs can actually cause more problems than leaving it open to drain. the duck tape causes the hoof to get hot. and you do now want that. also soak in epsom salts and warm water and wrap with a diaper and vet wrap. i had to inject into the hole betadine and peroxiod twice a day . and gave shots of pen g. and bute one am and one pm. about the exceed. keep a close watch on those feet and make sure they stay cool. stand in mud . hope he is better soon.

Agree with HL.. It has to breath to heal and yes keep the hole clean. Don't need a bacteria infection to set in. Hope he recovers quickly.

We are using the wrap as a way to draw out (with a poultice) the abscess. It has to drain and it is harder for them to drain out of the top. As well as keeping out debris which out lead to further infection. I have seen bone/joint infections and they are not something to play with.
He is feeling better now. Still sore, they seem to take longer when they drain out the top.

mustang... Using a wrap to hold a poultice on is fine. Use vet wrap which breathes instead of the duct tape which does not. Vet wrap is cheap and you can actually reuse it if you undo it carefully if needed.
Yes, the weep hole needs to be kept clean and clear.... Till the infection is gone your horse is going to not be himself although he will be "better". Glad some antibiotics to help fight and kill the infection are being administered
Hoof abscesses are something to be concerned with even if they have blown...they can lead to many other issues. Be careful. ....

just had a mare with an abcess that blew out the top earlier this year. Per Vet we put Pennecillin in the hole when still draining. Once fluid draining was clear we quit soaking and kept an eye on it. It healed fine although she is still tender on that foot.

Vet wrap actually doesn't breathe all that much, I know this from using it on myself. Vet wrap also does not stand up by itself, it gets worn through and get wraps very easily - exactly the opposite of what you want. I am using brown gauze, vet wrap and then duct tape. It is being changed daily as well. I have used a wrap like this many different times, as had my vet and my farrier. It works really well to get the thing draining. Hoof abscesses are something to be concerned about, hence why he was immediately taken to the vet and treated accordingly.
