See I was sure I was going to insist on cash but of course there is a slight risk with that as well. It seems like nothing is safe anymore. I think I will call my bank and see what they recommend for my protection.
Good reminder about not giving out my account number, thanks.

I think I will call my bank and see what they recommend for my protection. Good reminder about not giving out my account number, thanks. Calling your bank is a good idea,., they advised me when I sold the engine as to the best way to handle things. The internet makes it easier to advertise, but can be tricky as to cons and scams. ^^This was the advice of my bank,., just wait until the check clears, 7-10 days, and both parties were in agreement. Its a 'leap of faith' for both parties, but it worked well for me. Maybe have a 'liason' in your bank work with the buyer, so your are slightly removed from the sale. A 'contact person' for you both^, who has no interest in the sale, just an interest in an honest transaction. Also, for security on both ends, write up a letter of transaction/bill of sale, describing the details involved in the sale, with both parties signing and agreeing, and then you both have an accurate account of the transaction.

Sounds like I have someone that very interested in the trailer. He won't be able to come out until next week but I told him I would not hold it without a deposit so he's going to check again when he can come look at it. I guess we'll see what happens.

We have set up for this guy to come get the trailer on Wednesday (I sent more requested pictures and he says he wants it). Asked if he couldn't come, could he send his dad to pick it up. I told him fine as long as his dad had the cash and he was ok with his dad signing the title (title transfers have to notorized here). Guy sounds legit but I am still nervous. Does anyone see any issues with his dad picking up the trailer? I don't think I'm missing any red flags. His spelling and grammar are decent (for south Louisiana), questions make sense, etc. If I still have the trailer on Tuesday, I think I will send him a copy of the bill of sale so that he knows what his dad will be signing for him (primarily that the trailer is being sold AS IS, with no warranty, expressed or implied). He mentioned in his last email that his kids were excited. I asked what kind of riding he and his kids did and here's his response. He sounds normal, right? "We ride Quarter horse on the local trailride around in our area but I have one of my daughters that want to learn how to barrel race. I have a two trailer but we have a total of 9 horses and when they heard me saying bout getting a bigger trailer, they got all excited and wanted to see what it look like." ETA: I looked up his name on whitepages.com and a Jr and Sr came up for the town he is in. (Am I being paranoid??? )

^^NO! You're doing the appropriate research Sadly, we live in a world where someone's word isn't always good. You will know better, once you meet him. Make sure his story matches what he already has told you,., If he wants to pay in cash, get one of those counterfeit pens to check the money. Have someone there with you, don't meet him/them by yourself,.., and sign off on receipts and transaction documents. maybe your friend ( there with you) can 'witness' said documents? Then, if there are any thing goes awry in the transaction, you have recourse and a witness. Good luck and hope the sale goes smoothly !!

Make sure you remove the license plate {regardless of expired tag or not} and scrape registration off the trailer tongue if you put it there....
As of the time, date of sale noted on your bill of sale the trailer and responsibilities to it are over, null and void to you. If the guy is really on the ball he will arrive with a "transit" plate, temporary in nature.....
Document, make a picture or two of truck and trailer leaving {make a note of the tow vehicle plate}...
Hoping the sale is smoothly completed!!! ...

YAY!!! Trailer is sold, money is in the bank and trailer is on its way to its new home. It sounds like it will get a lot of use where it is going. They have 10 horses and it sounds like they like to go trail riding often. I was asking 4200 and ended up getting 3900. I was happy with it (especially since I almost listed it at 3800!).
So that's one less thing I have to worry about.

Congratulations on getting your trailer sold! I'm sure it's a big relief to not have to stress over it anymore. Well done!
