I think Dax has sweet itch, Ive seen this in scotland a lot but this is a first for me here, went to every horse place around yesterday and only managed to get a bar of soap stuff that you lather in and leave on for 14 hours so thats what I used, Im ordering some stuff I know works online but takes a week to come. Luckily I caught it before it got too bad, Ive seen horses go bald and fast, when I went to bring them in last night I could see lots of little midge no see ums buzzing above, Ira is scratching his tail but nothing like Dax who is in a drunken daze scratching everywhere, Im hoping to bath him today if weather stays ok, first pic is his tail, second his withers.

Interesting. I know nothing about it. Is it caused just by the heat (like a heat spot on a dog)? Or is there an underlying cause like a fungus like you see with rain rot?

Yikes! I've heard of it, but never seen it here. No advice, but hope he feels better soon. It looks like it can get quite serious.

According to the link it looks and sounds horrible. the only skin troubles i have has are some lice in the mini horses and than some skin irritations in the spring from the horses rubbing on the posts. i sprayed them all with medicated spray and within days it was gone. hope you can control it as you have caught it quick.

Poor Zippy had something similar to sweet itch the first summer I owned him. It was on his belly, so I hadn't really noticed it, just noticed him trying to scratch his belly on the ground (poor guy). I don't recall what I treated it with, I believe I washed it with iodine shampoo, until it cleared up. And made sure to keep fly spray on his belly to keep the midges away. He used to rub his tail badly too, and I used that MTG stuff on his tail 3-4x a week. This summer he hasn't had any major skin problems to deal with,., of course he gets bushed 2x a day. And his tail is brushed out 2x a day too. I think the regular grooming helps keep his coat in good shape.
Hope you caught this in time LD,.., looks painful.

I hate that MTG stuff, the smell kills me and so messy, all the dirt sticks to it, believe it or not its almost gone already, when I bathed him yesterday I noticed it was much better after putting the cornucrescine on it, I must have more or less caught it the first or second day, Iras tail is almost bald so today he will get bathed(first for him)and I bought a tiny lip balm sized cream from silver ag brand that cost me $21!...pricey eh?!...but supposed to be good, this should keep me going till the aroma itch arrives. They say to bathe them 2-3 times a week as this helps but yesterday I used the derma shampoo(I have ordered gallop medicated as I prefer it)with aloe etc and medicated but the midge no see um things were still hovering after, so I sprayed him all over with fly stuff too, Ive never seen a year as bad as this for annoying insects, the horse flies or deer flies as I think you know them are huge and love Ira who has bites and lumps from the all over:(

I also use fly sheets (the combo style) backed up with fly spray. Zippy would be frantic from the bugs if he didn't have a fly sheet on,.., very thin skinned, poor guy. The bugs have been horrible here this summer too,.., Come on Fall!!!!

NI I dont, I have one I got for Isis but my fields have so many trees I worry he will get hanked plus Ira is a pig and will rip it off him, I cant even keep fly masks on either of them, Isis was the only one who was safe as he was the middle horse!.....Ira is terrible, he untied himself twice when I was bathing him today!

So I've been bathing and putting cream on it for weeks now, its keeping it under control except for his tail and while its not bald he has 2 sore lumps on either side at his butt from rubbing it, he doesn't even like me touching them but I am as I have to, the midges are really bad, Dax is the worst they seem to love him, he smells good and is so soft from all the baths, I managed to get a hold of some gallop medicated today and they both seem happier tonight so hopefully that shampoo works better and lasts, its getting colder at nights so with any luck the midges will be dying off soon

So Im still struggling with this, its not severe but its bad enough that his mane while still long if you look closely you can see all the broken hairs and irritation, Dax is way worse than Ira, Ive tried mtg, the stuff from the states while it helps is so expensive and Ive ran out, I de wromed them with bimectin yesterday as its supposed to help and now using the tea tree wash to try that. Apparently these things dont die off till we have and its freezin conditions all day so I have to battle this for quite a bit longer, also once they had had a bad reaction like this they say it gets worse every year, great, I also bought a sweet itch supplement which Dax does not like so I will have to get molasses today to try to mix in with it, I found these pills online for next year I think I will try....http://itchyhorse.co.uk/product/buy-biocaps/ Also think I will have to invest in one of these blankets too, which means keeping him away from Ira when hes wearing it as Ira will wreck it....http://www.boettusa.com/#!sweet-itch/cs6e Theres an amazing product in the UK with benzy benzoate in it which would work just fine but its not available in the usa and canada and illegal to import, typical.
