Wow.... Nice photos.
I don't mind the occasional tree down out on the trail but not fences like these.... I know these are "babies" compared to some of them too.... I'll take my "knock-down" fences over these solid things any day...

Fabulous pictures, thanks for sharing! HL4L I was thinking the exact same thing about the solid jumps.
Okay, I'm going to be controversial, please don't throw any rotten tomatoes. I'm not much on jumping horses. I think it's terribly unnatural, particularly showjumping with those massive jumps. And after seeing slow motion footage of their fetlocks and legs as they land I find it disturbing and I wonder how they don't get damaged. Yes, most of the things we make our horses do isn't natural but a loose horse wouldn't be jumping as high as it can unless there's danger or it's wild and scared. Things like barrel racing, well, horses do run around and change directions quickly when they're playing. Tall English type horses and breeds don't necessarily want to jump any more than all tall guys should be basketball players. Sorry, not trying to vent or anything, I am just opinionated and there are some disciplines I'm not a fan of. Western pleasure, neither. Or extreme dressage.

I'll agree with you to a point nhg.... Extreme in anything I don't like, regardless of what the sport is or what kind of animal, even human is involved. Personally, I hate kick-boxing! The sheer magnitude of beating up of another human is beyond my comprehension, yet it is considered a "sport", allowed, encouraged and many love to watch it. I want to puke when I see it on TV and the beating, legally beating each does to another or one opponent inflicts unmercifully on the other and the ref just watches with cheering fans... To me that is disgusting!
So..... None of those fences are very high actually. If you look closely at some of the photos, the fence is not much higher than the horses leg itself. It is the solidness of the fences that throws the eye to thinking large. Not any of those photos is a horse "barely" clearing but clearing with ample room to spare, ears firmly pointed forward in anticipation and excitement. You couldn't make these horses jump if they truly did not like it...talk about putting on the brakes opportunity...whew!
As in any sport, proper conditioning before and leg/body care after makes it no worse than any other riding we do. Reining, cutting, sorting, horse racing, dressage, stadium jumping....everything puts a stress factor on the joints, tendons & ligaments. Ever just watch really closely when a horse is cantering in mid-depth footing...those pasterns flex and flex down quite a bit and spring back. Thankfully, there are not to many injuries because owners do take care of their animals as the animal takes care of their rider... My neighbors and my 5 nutty horses probably do more flexing of those joints with their playing, running around hard with quick starts, stops, bucks and rears....scary sometimes to watch them play!

They do break down. but when practicing and doing the shows they are wearing protective gear and the riders (take number 32) ain't no spring chicken. lol the damage to any horse in any type of riding is a danger. but what do we do with them if we can not enjoy and maintain to the best of our ability. those riders are fit and the horses are fitter. great photos and thanks for sharing. pictures

Thanks everyone! These horses love their jobs - they want to jump and gallop out there. They get so excited on XC days.
