So I have finches, I'm a wee bit excited, here's the story!
About 3 years ago I bought 2 gouldian male finches, batman and robin, I wasn't really into breeding them, looks difficult!
I'd never owned finches before, they got sick, I took them back to breeder, they had air sac mites, I treated them for months, batman is still with us but robin although he improved passed away:(
The breeder felt bad for me so gave me eagle boy, eagle boy is a rare blue and white gouldian with a black head but his head and neck feathers never grew in so no one wanted him as he looked ugly, the breeder took him and just popped him in with hers till I lost robin then he came to live with batman:)
So another year passed and I decided to get a female for batman, then I got a young one for eagle boy, then I split them into pairs.
This summer as eagle boys female got to adulthood his feathers started to grow back, he now is almost fully covered! she started laying eggs but all summer they have been infertile, today I went to check again as eagle boy has been sitting on the nest constantly, well there's 6 eggs in there and from what I can tell 1 is fertile!
i am quite excited, hope it's a Christmas baby and they are good parents, can't believe the ugly duckling that no one wanted is going to be a dad, should be an interesting colour too due to his special colouring, his markings in good feather sell for $400 plus in the pet stores!

Congrats on the anticipation of your baby birds. they sound adorable. reminds me of the time i was given a pair of finches and i gave them to my mother. she went to the pet store and he sold her a nesting box and the works for these two free finch. weeks later she told me she had to get another cage, or two or three as the babies are growing and she put them into different houses. again with nesting boxes. well after 16 cages in the house i made her take them all to the pet store, cages and nesting boxes , oh she kept two birds in separate cages not to have the brood again. lol

That's so sweet that his feathers grew back once he got a sweetheart! It's also sweet that he sits on the eggs. I'd love to see some pictures of them!

Not easy to get pics of! heres eagle boy, his head and neck were completely bald before! been having probs getting them to sit the eggs at night, I've discovered if I leave the room light on then they do so am doing that otherwise the egg will die, just waiting to find out it won't harm the birds! she laid another egg too and they've been looking for more nest material so I threw some in:) Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

I just got an email from the breeder who saved him and gave him to me, she says his head will stay that way as he's an unusual red which on blue looks salmon hence so pale, should get interesting coloured chicks!

Thanks everyone:)
I have another 2 eggs, so that's 5 in total, 2 are duds, 1 is alive and kicking, 1 I can see veins forming and the other was just laid, apparently the more you have the better chance of survival as 1 chick means the parents tend to get bored and ditch it:( It does mean they'll be a week or so apart though, keeping everything crossed, leaving the room light on is working a treat at keeping them on the nest, I must replace all the bulbs though just incase one goes at a crucial time:)

Luckily I have spare cages, I was going to sell them but people kept trying to screw me down so I hung onto them! I'd love to fly them over to you! if they're unusual colours I should be able to sell them among the breeding community here, won't get as much for them but at least they'll be looked after, of course there's a very good chance I might keep them, depends how many and what sex as I'll have to separate them so they don't breed;)
