OK, so Clinton Anderson isn't exactly a the traditional "product" that I'm sure this forum topic was intended for. But I went to see him at his "Walkabout Tour" yesterday, and it knotted me up so bad inside I was up until 2am writing what amounts to a review. I wouldn't want anyone else out there to waste any money on this guy. Even tho he's not a traditional product, he sure does have plenty of product to sell. I chose to post my words out on Chronicle of the Horse forum, since it will probably get a lot more eyeballs that way. Not for my own sake, but for the sake of horses and human consumers everywhere. No one has contacted me yet to take it down, but if for any reason it disappears I'd be happy to share on here. For now, I'll leave it with posting a link to the thread which you should be able to read without logging in. www.chronofhorse.com/forum/showthread.php?469717-Proud-member-of-the-Clinton-Anderson-quot-Tree-Hugger-Club-quot

I just read your post and read the umpteen posts after yours... NO, it won't be taken down I near guarantee it. Sounds like many feel the same way with "his techniques"...
A truthful critique... Think CA is fallen out of favor with the mass crowds for "a new flavor trainer".... couldn't care who that one is either!
I have never followed any of the hyped, advertising promoted trainers as the way to go. Could never ever figure out what was so special about a "carrot stick"...those special halter and lead shanks...
Oh please... I can use a dressage or driving whip, a 10' or longer lead shank and a rope halter with the best of them.
No, never did he or any of the others intrigue me enough to spend my hard-earned $$ or subject my horse to being "fixed" of a issue because you intimidate, beat into submission and exhaustion the horse...
There are some really good trainers out there....you need to look and watch closely though to find them. Most of the best in my opinion are not hyped or managed by a advertising company...but are out there getting clients by word of mouth, show ring results and by being in the barn every day spending the time with the animal to know how to reach them by their wavelength...
Glad he "impressed" you enough to write of your experience..............

A friend of mine who is into horses went with me. The two of us were muttering under our breath the whole time. My mom who's not even a horse person but loves all animals commented at one point asking if he was also selling snake oil. :-)
I had been tempted to buy two of his DVD's over the years, because 1) I have drafts, and 2) I have a horse who is a problem loading in the trailer. He goes in like a dream. Two fingers on the lead rope, goes in like a feather. Has a panick meltdown fly-out-the-back as soon as I start making motions to lock him in. Problem has gotten worse over the years not better. His vision has greatly declined. So for those reasons I was thinking of getting one DVD on drafts, and one on Trailering. Other than that, I didn't know much about him or his methods.
I was just floored by what I witnessed. It wasn't drawing blood, it wasn't horrible enough to scream at the top of my lungs to stop it, but I just kept feeling the horse's confusion. Even when she was WILLING to do right, he wasn't giving her the chance to do so.
And the potty mouth ... Heck I have a potty mouth myself! But not when kids are around, and DEFINITELY not if I'm speaking in front of a large audience of mixed ages and backgrouns. sheesh!
gah ... I just keep thinking of this ... I hope my account may do something to dissuade advertisers, or people from using their products. Standlee and Vetericyn were the two I noticed that I used most. I have an account with SmartPak but was alreayd avoiding them for other reasons.

I used to watch him on rfd -tv years ago and i cringed knowing that some people with little knowledge of what he was doing would try and tie their horse to a wall and wack it on the rump to get it to balk and hit it again until finally the horse stopped pulling back and would stand there getting hit over and over. I saw him several times at a horse expo that i go to and i actually muttered loudly as i was leaving that he should not be allowed to be near a horse as he is abusive. I was with some people one day and after his clinic i went to his booth as they wanted to get a book and his halter. soooo i had a book in my hand i wanted him to autograph . as i was standing near him he was bantering some garbage to a lady and her friend about horse training and his methods i just stood there . after a few minutes they shook their heads at mr a and walked away. i asked him if he would autograph the book and he went on my accusing me of wasting his time,"and he did not have time to answer any more stupid questions" i told him where to stuff his book and his halter and lead line i hand in my hand and told him he was rude and ignorant. and walked away while he was trying to get my attention. after that. my friend did not watch another ca dvd or i never watch him on tv either. and he has not been back to the expo since. he is a has been and his treatment of horses is known by many.
his audience is getting less and less and he knows he is done.

Lady MCSE your post on COH was very well written. I have used some of the CA techniques but do not believe in wacking my horse to cause welts. Most of what he taught in the beginning was just repetition. That is the core of all training repetition to create a desired response. CA started at a farm near me many many years ago. Wahl Clipper brought him in- even then storied circulated around my area of the cruelty to the horses he dealt with. Tied standing not for hours but for days, beatings and running to exhaustion. And his penchant for the young ladies was discussed even then and he was probably in his very early 20's at the time.
Horse owners should educate themselves enough to realize what works for their horses - blindly following a Rock Star clinician, sports hero, Rock star etc seems to be a huge issue in America.

That was very well written and interesting, think hes one of many these days unfortunately, Ive lost just about all confidence in horse trainers, maybe in the future things will change for the better once more people realise what a load of bulls**t this all is

After being slightly afraid that maybe I was inviting a defamation of character case for myself, I decided that everything I wrote was as true as I could make it, and I did stay away from the epithets and name calling about him that I would have liked to use. But now I think I've decided that I should find out more about this guy and start contacting his sponsors. Some of what I've been hearing is that he has been getting harsher over the years, and I would hazard a guess that maybe a matter of he gets the support more because it's always been done that way than because of who he is now.
Privately I exchanged words with the friend of mine (acquaintance really) who had invited me to go. She had a free ticket because she belongs to the downunder club. She said that because I didn't hear all his words at the beginning about his philosophy that I didn't understand. She also said that the horses were dramatically changed the following day, so much more respectful. Her words of defense and the way Anderson's actions didn't always jive with what was coming out of his mouth both remind me of the spouse or child abuser who says "I love you" or "It's for your own good" as the fists fly.

There are always going to be different training methods and those that follow certain methods will defend that method no matter what. She may have used his methods with her own horse and had good results - so many of his followers are not going to be as harsh as he is and the method will still work. I for one will say that I don't condone harshness for the sake of being mean to a horse but in dealing with a spoiled horse that owners have let get out of control there are times when extra discipline is necessary.
I felt your review was thoughtful without being slanderous.

Very eloquently written. I hope it helps someone. I have to say that I'm completely ignorant of his methods. I've certainly heard his name plenty of times but have never seen anything other than the occasional magazine article. I personally have a terrible potty mouth but would never demean myself in public by using it. He sounds like a first rate jackass.

I will admit that in the beginning (10 years ago+) I was a bit of a CA fan, and since Red was so truly broke, some of the 'games' were fun for us, as stuff we could do differently. As well, the 'sound bite clichés' were helpful reminders ("reward the slightest try", etc.) but I did begin to tire of him personally, and his endless, RELENTLESS push to buy anything, and everything, he sold. I think his 'Ozzie show' is very typically, Australian, and rather arrogant. And I do believe he has fallen from favor bc his 'techniques' border on abusive. They might work with some horses, but they were far too harsh for a super sensitive horse like Zippy. He probably has BIG bill$ to pay since he built a BIG facility in Texas,., after building a HUGE facility in OK. So not surprised he wants me to load up on the training crap Never did any clinics, or tours, but recently got an email about using his already trained horses in order to attend one of his clinics. LOL, you can use the horse for a mere $250 a day, plus cost of the clinic, plus your travel expenses, and your meals, PLUS - YOU provide its care and bedding. They will provide its feed,.., bahahaha!!!!! Right!!!!
I'd say that business probably isn't too good right now for Clinton, Mate!!
