My male miniature dachshund has not been acting like himself. He is scheduled to see the vet this afternoon. He is lethargic, slobbering a lot and licking his paws and anything around him constantly. he shakes his head when he gets up from a nap and just really is not himself. His sister (litter mate) has been cleaning his ears constantly - so we thought it was an ear infection. He has never in the 11 years we have had him had an ear infection - his sister is meticulous about keeping his ears and eyes clean. Vet asked me about a possible allergy problem because he is licking his feet as well. We thought and thought about what has changed and the only think is his flea treatment on Friday with Frontline Plus- and once we started talking about it as a family we realized he had had a similar reaction last year. Please send Prayers for our little Bing dog- we adore him and his sister would be lost if something happened to him. They have never slept apart in their entire lives.

Oh poor Bing. I hope it is just a mild allergic reaction and easily treatable with Benadryl or something. I'm glad he is going to see the vet. Let us know what s/he has to say.

Our dog had a reaction when it was young to one of those flea meds, how horrible, he was practically crying, scratching, trying to rub it off, running in circles. Even though dogs do sometimes try to rub it off, this was an off the chart reaction, no question something was bad. And of course we had put it on late at night. After a search on the internet, it was suggested many times to give them a bath with dawn dish detergent. So there we were at midnight bathing this poor dog.
I have to say his relief was almost immediate. We never used that brand again. It wasn't frontline, but I don't remember the name brand at the moment.
Good luck, I hope it is as simple as that.

Hope he is better. and just a note. NEVER use dog flea on a cat and vise versa seems there are ingredients that will actually KILL a cat if not caught in time . so please read the box and if any of these items are left over from the year before throw them out.

Praying for your poor little guy. I hope the reaction is only a very mild one and the vet is able to help him.

Vet call went well. Bing has blisters along his lips and lower jaw as well as in his mouth. His breathing is labored and heart rate up a bit. No temp and his ears looked clean. The Vet was hesitant to lay blame on the Frontline but said it is most definitely an allergic reaction. He got a steroid shot and some salve - he is feeling a little better - he actually barked this morning when we went out to feed the horses and calves - he hasn't done this since Sunday (he usually barks as soon as he steps outside in the am- I think it is to warn everyone that he is on the lookout!)
He is still lethargic but seems a bit better.

So glad to hear he is improving!
From the blisters being around his mouth, it sounds like he ate something he was allergic to. Maybe he got into an odd plant outside, or maybe a houseplant? Hmm, I don't know what plant would do that.
That is so scary.

It sounds like little Bing is on the mend. The steroid shot should help tremendously. I would be sure to not use Frontline again (or any other meds with the same active ingredients), better safe than sorry.

Frontline is not a good product - not to mention it simply doesn't work. Poor kid, sounds like he is on the mend.

Thank you for asking - he is back to his old bouncy self now. I don't think the corizone shot did anything but make him less itchy and the Frontline had to slowly wear off. That was so scary poor Bing is such a lover and the entire family was nervous and scared for him. He got a little too used to cuddling with my son in his bed every morning - now that the no dogs in bed rule is back in effect he is a little bummed!

That's great news that he is back to normal! No more Frontline for Bing.
