I think this is a cute story so I thought I'd share it. Brodie is our chocolate lab/cocker cross and Amigo is our pittie/spaniel cross. Last year, right before I had the blood clot, both of them were being treated for ear infections. Amigo was bad for scratching his ear and tearing the skin and then screeching every time he scratched it again so I'd get all agitated and be yelling 'Amigo, no!' when he scratched his ears. They were becoming a real mess because of it. Brodie, Mr Smarty Pants, decided that he'd help me by barking at Amigo every time he scratched his ears. Often I didn't even know he was scratching them until I heard Brodie barking. So that was last November. Today Amigo started scratching his ear. He doesn't have an infection, he was just scratching. Brodie jumped up and started barking at him. After all this time he remembered that I didn't like it and was trying to help. Smart little cookie. I had to stop him, of course, I don't need him provoking Amigo or starting an issue.
Brodie also recently trained Jim to give him cookies. Jim thought he was being a smart guy by giving them all cookies every time he called them inside so they'd come in right away when he called them. Brodie quickly figured out that he could get Jim to let him out more often and just stand there for a minute and then want back in and get a cookie. Jim fell for it over and over. If I was by the door and Brodie wanted out and I said something like 'no, you're not going outside' Brodie would look at me like 'whatever, I don't want you to let me out anyway' and then look back at Jim.
I love all of our dogs but he's definitely the smartest one.

That's funny. I remember you telling us about it last year. Funny to think he still remembered! And too funny he trained Jim. I remember he wouldn't listen to Jim before. What a very smart pup! Did Jim ever catch on to what Brodie was doing?

Oh, did I tell this story before? I'm sorry! My memory isn't so great anymore and wasn't that good to begin with. Yes, Jim knows but he still does it. He loves Brodie so it's kind of an excuse for giving him cookies. I give them cookies sometimes when they come in, particularly if they're barking and they stop and come in right away, but I break them in half.

You had only told the first half of the story, it was great to hear that Brodie still remembered! And last we had heard, Brodie would only go out when you told him to, even though Jim was waiting at the door for him to go out.

Thanks MM. So much I don't remember. I'd even forgotten that Brodie used to bark at Amigo like that until he did it again.
