Sorry it's been a while! So for my mom's birthday my sister and I decided to pitch in together to send mom's horse Genie for training. Definitely the best decision we have ever done!!! My mom decided to extend her training by one week and boy, you will be amazed with the results! Keep in mind, this is the same horse who would refuse to lead, take off at random things in the bush, toss her head like crazy. I'm beyond amazed at this point... he's done all of this in two weeks!!!! I rode her on a trail ride yesterday too, she was a doll

She is looking wonderful and your trainer seems to know his stuff. he looks very relaxed and straightforward in his movements (shows in still photo) and she is responding nicely to that. we would love some more updates on his methods and her progress.

Wow...quite a different horse!!
Imagine what you have when he is finished with his training time...
...what a partner she will have then!

Fantastic results. I'm glad you found a great trainer for Genie. Did your mom take some lessons with this guy so she knows how to communicate with Genie effectively?

Fantastic results. I'm glad you found a great trainer for Genie. Did your mom take some lessons with this guy so she knows how to communicate with Genie effectively? I wish!!! He is firm about not teaching. He likes dealing with horses and people... Well not so much lol! But he isn't afraid to show us what he does with her and a bit of his reasoning behind it which I find helps a lot! And he encourages us to go over and ride her as much as we can while she's there and kinda says what he has to to help us along type thing. Also since we wanted her work mostly to be quiet on trails he is getting my mom to go on a trail ride with him as her final "test" type thing. I went the other day and she was great so hopefully she responds the same with my mom. She tends to still have her old habits with my mom (head tossing and etc, but that was week #1) I think when she comes home Monday she's hopefully going to be golden as long as my mom keeps working her regularly!

Wonderful! The right trainer makes a world of difference. Some people just have it. What a cool idea for your mom, I bet she's thrilled!

What a genuinely thoughtful gift. And the trainer is one of the good ones. Win-win-win, can't ask for more than that.

So Genie came back home on Monday, My mom and her had a rocky start, she tried to take her on a solo trail ride and she got dumped because Genie decided to revert to old habits and ran out on the trail. A definite rocky start. then she did ground work and the horse wasn't responding to her at all. The trainer was pretty upset by this because she was going soooo well!! I decided to go out and help my mom and see what was going on. I gave my mom a few pointers with ground work and body language. It was really odd I would go to lunge her, and she was perfect. She was responding, moving away really well, trotting and catering.. My mom would try on the other hand and she would just stand still. She didn't even realize it but she was being submissive to Genie without even realizing. She would try sending her off and her shoulders would be crouched down, ect. So after I got my mom to straighten up/stand tall, look at her bum, make sure her shoulder doesn't get ahead they actually started working together finally. Genie also figured out how to run out of my mom so I added knots in the rope for her to hold on to and told her that if she feels her start to push out at all to give a little pull/nudge to get her head in and listening again. I also got her to ride her, coached her a bit on how to use her reins and legs to keep her straight on the trail since we know she always runs out the same way, and guess what! No issue So that ride went well, my mom also rode her yesterday too and she had a good ride So I'm glad everything is working out really well. It's nice to see my mom working her horse and riding every day!!!

That is what 's called the horse training the owner. the body language of a person is sooo important and you both are learning that. remember, horses learn by doing and the more you do it correctly the better.

yea they are slowly sorting out their issues now, my mom is making a lot of effort to work her everyday which I feel is key right now that's for sure.
It's funny though because I go to lunge her and she was reacting the same way she was with the trainer, with my mom on the other hand she has a hard time getting her moving forward. Hopefully I'll go out there today and help her out. We will see

Looks like she made wonderful progress with the trainer. Hopefully the more your mom practices (with your guidance and assistance), the better she'll get and they can develop a wonderful partnership together.

I think the training is a wonderful gift. It is amazing how horses can read riders and act so differently depending on who is handling them.

Sounds like a work in progress.
Can I say the difference between you and mom, how the horse works & responds has to do with respect, work ethic and leadership. Those three above items of who earns it, demands it and uses it appropriately. Mom and her horse will come to a understanding as you now are seeing.... Keep giving some helpful pointers to mom and keeping the horse correctly responsive so no reverting happens. Mom is on a learning curve, then again so is the horse to a new respect now needed for this handler/rider than before.
jmo...

I'm pretty proud of my mom, she's not over the hill with Genie yet, but she makes a point of working her everyday. She's been home for over two weeks now and her first day "off" without my mom working her was this weekend. Definitely not complaining. She's gone on trail rides with her and worked her on the ground and under saddle. So far she hasn't pushed to make her trot or really "work" just because my mom isn't comfortable going much faster then walk/trot. I have faith they will get there.

It does take time for a relationship to build and there is nothing wrong with a meandering trail ride walking and trotting, the faster strides will come with confidence the both of them will gain. and good for your mom for trying and getting out in the open.

Agree, this is what Im doing with Ira, after that last so called trainer worked with him he was nuts and just wanted to gallop, wouldnt stand still or anything so so far Ive just been teaching him to stand and walk and short trot bursts and now hes actually getting lazy again which is what he was like before, I do think its easier to teach them to go fast than slow!

You know LD, you are a hoot, you know that right? And yeah, relationships take time, plus horses are like the most high maintenance girlfriends possible... or is that just me and Peaches? *blush*
