Today was it, I was going to suck it up and quit dicking around with the whole "he must behave in the riding pen"
He bucked and called on the lunge, wouldn't let me bridle, so back to lunge. Got him bridled, he snorted and heads up tail up. I ended up leading him with the BO riding . I was embarrassed and frustrated.
Now the win, well on the trail (with him tense nd heads up most of the way) we came to puddles and I realized, we've never walked through a puddle. Well I didn't want to get me feet wet, so after watching BO walk through and I let him sniff, then he did a little paw. We started to walk, well Good Lord, Riley's pushing me off into the brush trying to walk in the little bit of dry ground I was walking on. 3 puddles, he's stepping on my heels and pushing me over. On the way back, we stopped again, he sniffed, he pawed, then he just splashed his way through dragging his nose through it. I never got on,on the trail, but as we got back, I kinda thought F it. 10mins (at leas felt like it) before he stood enough for me to get on. 2 steps and we head tossing and trying to jog (no we not in riding pen) I was dejected and afraid and was about to get off in defeat when I remembered someone on here asking me last year "what would you have done if you weren't afraid" Right then I got mad and said to my BO over my shoulder. Stay back. And we turned and turned in a tight circle. He stood, for a bout 10 seconds, and tried to start backing up. I let him, long enough to make sure it wasn't me inadvertently keeping reins too tight, then pushed him forward, again immediately attempting to jog, and around in circles we went again. Long story short, we got a walk, across a bit of yard, around the outside of the round pen and back. I got a stand still (the leaned forward and scratching had a lot to do with that rather than discipline) I asked BO "A win?" She said a win. Then offered to hold him so I could get off. I felt surprise at that, but it made me realize just how bad we look. I let him start to step forward then threw my leg over, he froze. She told me he is undisplined and I need to work on that (the letting him eat grass, but in his defense that was really the main way he got grass at home, on a lead) She also commented on his muscle building now that I've done so much lunging trying to get on. He's still not the laid back horse I had at home. I'm hoping next time will be easier, for me, to stick it out now I did it once.
