Few day ago we brought to our home a new stallion/stud/horse whatever you wanna call him. He is a pretty 12 year old Lipizzaner. Anyways, when we unloaded him from a trailer we noticed he was sore, his right front leg was in the air. We called a vet and he said it is just stretched(or pulled?!) muscle, and we need to cool it with a gel, put an elastic bandage and tie him down to keep him calm and rested. We guess he slammed his leg in the trailer or something. His muscle, below the shoulder is hot to touch and he is putting all of his weight on his other leg which cause that leg to loosen up(that is why it is fishy , how can leg loosen up so much after this little time, 4-5 days he has been here). Unfortunately, horse is from a Croatian stud,my father went to see him a long time ago, horse seemed fine, after few weeks they should bring him to us but they were postponing it because of some blood work bla bla, and when they did , horse was hurt in a trailer and we had to pay for a vet?! It is what it is so we are dealing with it now, he is a bit better, he can stand on that leg , but is still hot on touch. JoMarie(horselady) suggested to put him in a stall where he can be free and moving, also suggested to use hot and cool towels as exercising and backing him few times a day. Vet did not gave him pain medication, he said he does not need them, but I have Fenilbutazon so will give that to him. Other opinions and comments are welcome. Thank you.

Has he improved at all? I'm a believer in letting a sore horse move around and I probably wouldn't have him stalled. If it's his shoulder he may have slipped in the trailer. I agree about not giving him anything for pain in case it makes him feel so good he reinjures the area. Soft tissue injuries can be so hard to deal with and take so long to heal.

I agree with HL - I would keep him in a stall so that he can move about but not too much or too fast but I would also get him out and just hand walk him for a bit at least once a day. If it is a pulled muscle, than the cooling gel may help or maybe try hydrotherapy where you are hosing it once or twice a day. Poor guy, I'm glad he is with you and getting the attention he needs. Giving the bute, at least short term, will help so that he does not injure his other leg by overusing it. But I would still keep him confined with only hand walking until he is sound without the help of meds.
Good luck!
LOL. nhg and I were posting at the same time and give completely opposite advice. I will say I've never dealt with an injury like this so perhaps take my advice with a grain of salt.

Two different advice. Hmm... I can't turn him out because he is new and only one pasture I have , I am afraid because he is injured and new mares will see him week and hurt him. I can put him in front corral but there I keep my other stallion. The vet said minimum walking, max resting. I put him in a delivery stall. Lots of room. Also will hand walk him and do the exercise. With the pain medication I think will not use them, since the vet also said there is no need. He is better. He does stand on that leg but still is hot on touch. And other leg looks very loosen. He still leans on it.

The photo does show a sizeable puffiness in the upper part of his leg. and if it is hot or warm it has definitely been bruised. i wonder if he might have gotten banged in the horse trailer You are doing the right thing to move him to a larger stall where he could lay down and if he is standing at least take the pressure off that right leg. and i would not wrap it unless you are going to put cold gel pad and wrap to keep it on. cold hose or wraps. and i would also alternate with warm.
hand walking is a good idea and also backing him up so he uses those muscles. please keep us up to date on his progress. he is beautiful and i know you are going to do the best you can for him.

Remember, I'm no vet and when Prince had his fall a few months ago and Heather was calling me in a panic I didn't know what to do. Maybe stall rest is best for him, I can't say. I understand your problem with letting him out. Is he getting any better?

Today he is much better. He is eating better and his leg is less hot. I am doing hot and cold and walking.

Eating better is always a good sign the horse is feeling better. and hopefully he is putting more pressure on both his front legs and not just the good one. horses will put weight on the good leg and that leg needs to be watched so they do not founder or get fever in the hoof. You did good in taking care of him and hopefully in a week he will be as good as new.

He is almost completely well! He puts weight on the "bad leg", there is no heat or swelling. Just amazing how , when you do the right thing in a right way something can help so fast. I was putting hot and cold towels maybe 3-4 times a day, and walked him 2 times a day. Second day he was feeling better, and today he is acting like nothing happened. I am gonna do this treatment for another day or two just to be safe and then call a vet to check him out.

That's wonderful to hear! I'm so glad he is feeling better. Will he be used to breed some of your mares?

Yes, he is a different line then our stallion so we took him for "new blood". And thank you :-)

Missed this, glad hes doing better, I skimmed through the replies mostly after first 2 but usually soft tissue injuries require stall rest:)
