I can not suggest anything else that would help his neck. and do allow him to eat more during the day in roughage is a good idea. does not have to be grain or rich hay, as was suggested oat straw is just as good as a filler as anything else. You do not want him crashing. so next time vet is out for a horse in the barn have them pull his level for sugar and cushings. and thyroid.

I rode a Morgan/Paint for years. Even as she got older her neck was hard cresty muscle - when she was in her mid 20's and thinned way down due to health issues her neck was still crested and firm- but you could see the outline of each and every rib. I owned her 23yrs - she was between 26-28 when I had to have her put down.

One difficulty is not having our own place anymore. We can't expect the owners to go too far out of their way to help him lose weight and we're limited to what hay they have. Which is good stuff but too good for him, I guess. The bottom picture was our place and he was about 6 or 7 years old. The top pic is recent and he's now about 16 or 17, possibly 18. He's always had the old style morgan body but it's definitely worse. He got the crest last year at our friend's place when they let them out in the spring grass full time. We were lucky he didn't founder, two of their horses did and one is ruined. I don't believe neck sweats work any better than they do for people other than on a temporary basis.

I think he might be losing a bit of weight. Hard to tell when you see him regularly

Maybe a little. It looks like he's losing his winter coat some.

Thanks Lip! I glad his mane is finally growing back. He rubbed it out last spring. I might be going to see him later today! I'm feeling pretty good and the weather is nice (for now) and Heather said she'd take me out there. I haven't driven since before I went in the hospital and won't go anywhere alone yet.

Oh, I hope you get to go see Prince. What good it will do for your spirits! Pics please of the reunion if Heather can. Be careful though, he probably doesn't realize you are not back at full strength yet.

That reminds me, time to call the farrier. The first picture doesn't look like me, does it Heather? My god, I've had that red jacket/sweater thing for about 20 years. How embarrassing. It's perfect for weather like we had yesterday, though. His crest is getting a tiny bit smaller.

Threw my English saddle on him and jumped him a bit. But with hard work comes his "asthma" so he hacked his poor guts out half the time. I'll start him on the meds from the vet for that this week and see if I can get it under control so I can work him harder. Poor dude was even trying to time his coughs so he wasn't coughing right before the jump.

He sure is handsome and so in love with nhg. and perhaps ask the vet for dexamethasone. i used to give that to one of my stallions with heaves. it is a shot. but you have to keep an eye out on the heat in his feet. i never had side affects . from it as i gave it to him before he went outside.

He's on Dexamethasone now, the vet gave it too me months ago but I couldn't be out every day to give it to him. Hope to see some results from it. The vet also gave me a liquid to put on a bit of feed for him before a ride to help open up his lungs. Haven't tried it yet. But he gets dex on some feed every day (like he needs extra feed lol)

I had a heavy stallion and i used to give him halls cough drops with menthol in them. and i put vicks vapo rub on his nose and rubbed some on his chest to help him breath. and remember harder work is not the ans sometimes as perhaps just longer times walking up and down hills. you are doing what you can for him and that is all that counts.

We were out last night to get their feet trimmed and Prince looks great, I'm really happy with the weight he's lost. I'd post a picture but they're on my phone and I've forgotten how to send them to myself.
