A friend of mine is having her baby shower in about 3 weeks, and I have not the faintest idea what I should get her. Children in general are not exactly my forte, babies even less so. She is having a little girl.
Any ideas on what a suitable gift might be? She is registered at a few stores, but I took a quick peek and it looks like they mostly have larger, more expensive items. I'm just not going to drop $100+ on a shower gift. Is cash in an envelope tacky?
She is an equestrian as well, so I thought something horse themed, but I am really at a loss here.

Agree diapers - even a gift card is appreciated. If you could get a gift card at one of the places she is registered at it can go toward the purchase of one of the larger items

Hate baby showers and wedding showers. the i want list is always expensive items and trust me they will not get used. they will return them for credit at the store. with that being said. if you know someone who quilts or crochets or knits how about a stroller blanket. the child will grow with it and it is something that always makes a wow presentation.

With warm weather approaching she may take the baby for a carriage/stroller walk. I loved the netting you can get to cover the entire stroller from pesty flies, gnats and bugs in general.
If you opt to buy diapers...don't do newborn but maybe a larger size so when the baby is a little bigger she still has a supply when you suddenly go the next size up.. like a size 2!! Also same with outfits...not newborn. I found 6-9 months was the smallest I would purchase in onesies, blanket sleepers and such. With the weight of newborn babies today...many are born at easy 8+ pounds...... They grow and gain weight fast...they outgrow many times before it is even worn.
Baby sundries of sunscreen, diaper rash cream{I used Balmex brand}, nail file, baby lotion...all must be hypo-allergenic for safety reasons.
A nightlight for those midnight feeding or changing needed done and not wanting the house all aglow.
A small food chopper {I got one in Walmart for $10.00} to make human food into baby food and not need to pull out the big food processor...used one often.
Mylicon Drops... found in the pharmacy section they help stop the pain of gas pains in a baby....She will love you for these!!
Just some different ideas than the usual norms of gift given. Everything can be found in Walmart, K-Mart or a regular store...you don't need a baby specialty store for any of this! A nice bottle of wine to enjoy with her significant other in celebration!

I like the idea of buying stuff that is used rather than simply owned.

I like to buy the things people forget they may need, like infant tylenol, kids benedryl, the homeopathic cold stuff (Boiron makes several kinds), a baby saline nasal spray, etc. It's nice to have so you don't have to go out with a sick baby to get it.

I ended up coming across a beautiful receiving blanket set and stuffed horse that looks just like my friends mare, so I opted to get that. I also tossed in a few odds and ends from the Walmart baby section, teething rings, a few little outfits and some hair bows
