I know this is a long shot but for any of those who are mechanically inclined or know someone who is:
How do I tell what kind/brand of engine is in my riding lawn mower? I have the mower's manual but not the engine manual and I need to replace the alternator. I've look all over online and have sent an email to the company I usually use for parts (they were closed for the day by the time I got in this afternoon). I thought it would be marked somewhere on the engine but I can't find it. Of course the mower is about 20 years old so it may have just rubbed off over time.
Thanks!

It's a Woods zero-turn (model 5215).
I love working on my farm equipment and I could probably replace the alternator myself now that I know what the problem is but the guy who is helping me is also going to work on my 1974 International Cub (which is beyond my repair knowledge) and is going to help me sell my Kubota lawn tractor (that told me was worth 3x what I was thinking! YAY!).

Is it a diesel engine??? Kubota diesel engine possibly? 21 horsepower?
Here you go.... www.woodsequipment.com/zeroTurnMowers.aspx
I put in a search for "20 year old Woods Zero Turn model 5215 mower" and up popped so much information and videos available......
If not diesel then do a search for whatever type of engine it is.....
If it looks anything like the photos they showed...NICE!!! What a workhorse!!

I actually found the engine sticker really easily once I was actually looking for it - it was right in front of my face. Now to find the alternator I need. :-)

Moral support for engine work LOL I dunno, that is an odd combination but you know, it's true!
I remember having to fix the speedometer cable on a pickup I had. The stupid BOY who owned it before and considered himself a mechanic had put in some foo-foo exhaust system (because it looked cool, didn't necessarily work better but gave him bragging rights) that was too big and caused him to re-route the speedometer cable which is encased in rubber right up against the exhaust system. So it melted and malfunctioned. I figured out where it was and came up with the idea to encase it in metal electrical conduit. Well when I went into the auto parts to buy the part I didn't know the names of the stuff I needed but I could explain it. The young man got this strange look on his face and I thought, oh, oh, here goes, ridicule. We all know how men treat us when we go buy auto parts or other machine stuff. Well then he said the most wonderful thing, "I am so impressed, so many men ask for parts but they really don't know what they're doing. Here you come in, knowing exactly what you want and truly understand what you are doing!" I was just glad that I was able to fit under the vehicle, if you know what I mean *blush*

LOL. I will take all the moral support I can get!
After talking to a few companies, I finally found one that could help me. I had to go back and find the serial number on the engine and then, I guess because it's so old, the guy couldn't find it in his computer - had to go back to the paper records. But he found an alternator for me! Shipping today. I also ordered all new oil filters and air filter. It's getting a bit expensive but I need the mower to run and I will be able to recoup these expenses when I go to sell it later this year (I will be getting my grandfather's newer mower).
Now the waiting game for the parts to come in.

Oh No paper shuffling.how many young punks today wouldn't have the gumption to look further than the computer and then only if it jumped out at them. Grumble grumble LOL
