When we built our first barn it was in february , after the roof was up and they started to do the walls, the men were cold. so someone borrowed a furnace, it was two 55 gallon drums one on top of the other and they began to burn all the scrap wood. within a day they needed shavings for the mud that was underfoot because it was so hot. and go look at horses with an eye of not a buyer but an observer.

Some new pictures...almost done. Between weather nasties and family visiting we haven't accomplished much lately...so yesterday finally we were able to "get at it" again. No stall doors nor flooring (think we are leaving it dirt for now). The stall walls are completely done finally. Guys finished putting up the dividing panels yesterday late afternoon. So...now we are up to hanging what we are using for doors, all the hardware for buckets and re-leveling and filling in any openings under the walls from building not done yet...small spaces thank goodness. Considering mats although I don't really like them, but we will see how hard it is to keep my stalls dry without a "moisture" barrier in place... Off to get many bags of shavings in plastic to be stacked, not spread in the stalls for when the horses come home. Hopefully, that will be real soon... Any suggestions are still greatly appreciated. Hope I remember how to do the link...the pictures were added to the original album so scroll through to find the newest ones please... Click on my library if the pictures don't come up on there own...only my barn pictures are here. s1290.photobucket.com/upload#

somehow that photobucket link is opening my photos. not sure why. I had the same problem. That latest link doesn't work. I went back and used this one that she posted earlier in the thread.
Thank-you. I am not good at this picture posting stuff...someday I may "get it" but it doesn't seem to be to soon. My camera battery died {of course}...we have stall doors up on 2 stalls and finishing securing the wire panels so they don't move or wiggle no matter how hard they push on them. I need to hang my water & feed buckets... Can someone give me an idea of how high off the floor to hang them. I'm using 20 qt. flat back Fortiflex buckets for everything. I'm thinking about 2' off the floor to the bucket bottom but not sure. Preparing for horses over 15 hands in height... HELP....

I just use over-the-wall bucket hooks to hang my water buckets on. Here is a picture of the inside of one of my stalls to give you an idea how we did ours and how high we hung them. It has worked out really well for us having them hung at this height. (The water bucket is hanging by the gate, and then we have a corner feeder mounted in the corner of the stall.)

The stalls look great, i had to remember you are in florida where you do not really need walls. lol as for the buckets imagine chest high for feed and for water. just make sure the buckets are high enough that a hoof can not be put into it . . I use " O" rings with double snap hooks. that way i can take off and wash out and hang again. You can use corner feeders like the ones terry has and secure them to the wall. I use those can go into the corner and a scoop used to feed from the outside thru a larger hole in the wire,
as for mats, if you can get away with out them than do not use them. i am sure you will make those horses as comfy as you can.

Our stall walls are 52" high of solid wood, then another 50" high of steel wire panels... don't think we need to worry about fighting over the tops.
Throw tomatoes but if I had to choose between mats or concrete...I would choose the concrete. I really despise mats as I have seen horses paw them up then get caught and injured on them. Never have I had a issue of lameness, soreness or anything happen to any horse I was in charge of with heavily bedding my stalls with the concrete floors underneath. I've handled some of the best show-hunters in the country many times and no adverse effects if real care is taken...
I am going to do the "dirt" floors and see how we do during rainy season...that will be the test for sure.
As for a "closed" barn...we are working on a plan to be able to close up the top for serious inclement weather conditions but easy to remove for the warmer weather and humid conditions we also need to prepare for... thinking roll up/down clear sides like you would have on a boat or something like that.
ETA:... hubby says it is dirt or concrete..no mats, period. He has also seen the injuries at his friends moms barn and says "No to mats." So far we have agreed to start the stalls with 4 bags of bedding minimum and go from there...haven't bought it yet but we will soon. We won't open the bags nor spread it till needed.

Go with concrete less shavings in the long run and if there is a mill near by use sawdust. and buy a muck fork on the other forum it is worth every penny.

Wow! Your barn is looking fantastic. I am extremely jealous. Did you come up with the layout by yourself or did you use a plan?

Hi Mister...Hi redzip...
I will say Thank-you. This is part of a dream coming true of mine I've had forever it seems...ever since I was pregnant with my son. I have always wanted my barn on our property with the horses in it...taken 26+ years for that dream to start to become reality...but it is happening!! I have had the horses my complete responsibility for years, but they were never on our land, just rented a barn and pasture space. So... The layout is my husbands doing. I told him what I needed...he asked me what I wanted and we are going from there. We have the 3 box stalls currently, each actual inside dimensions of 12'3" x 12'3" so no matter what size horses we find they "fit" as my hubby says. Once we really finish finish the stalls {some more securing of the metal dividers is needed}, we {he} wants to build a feed/utility room...size TBD. Then we are onto the fencing which will be plank. 3 or 4 board high, haven't firmed that up yet either. The barn is large enough I can currently put the horse trailer and hubbys' Quad cab Ram with long bed and the 4 horse trailer attached under it and still have room either front or rear. We will be able to walk the horses past and into their stalls if we leave the truck/trailer underneath but our plan is to move them out and leave the space for the horses to roam. I have the space for 6 stalls and a center aisle, but not planning 6 stalls...that is more than "to big" for our needs. Storage is another issue though...the space I'm sure will be utilized quickly. We have another 2 acres next to our property we are hoping to use as pasture, hopefully purchase if the price is right. My other neighbors have generously offered me their front yard/field to fence off with electric and use as pasture also...since I mow it for them now it would be less work for me and they love the idea of horses in the yard that they need not $$ feed but can enjoy. I have great neighbors!!
Someday when I get better posting pictures I will post some of my house, really of my backyard and barn behind my house, the pasture next door, my driveway and neighbors front yard and of my old home and what I willingly gave up to move to our new home...quite a difference. Pinch me, I think I am still having a dream!!! sorry for the book...can you tell how excited I am to see this happening for all of us...words can't describe my feelings!Ask horselady...she has been along for some of the ride with my endless questions and thoughts and her patient suggestions and guidance...my thanks to my friend!!

The barn structure is done!!! Yay.... We now start the stall{s}.... 1 needed so we can shop for Michaels' horse now for santa-sleigh and then continue building and preparing for the other horses to come home. So, if I do it right...I think I can add the final picture of the barn done... Once we do stalls I will start "more" pictures... sun.....

I'm pretty late to this; and yeah, a barn without walls wouldn't be a barn in MN, but Florida, that makes perfect sense! Now that you have my approval LOL Any more pictures of the barn? and maybe a horse?
