Well... the time has come for us to put up the new pole barn.
So, if I do this correctly some photos to share of a work in progress....
We decided on a 30' x 36' barn, inside dimensions....outside becomes a 34'x40' with a 2' overhang all around. 3 stalls that we will build and finish ourselves along with a "secured" fully enclosed feed room and hopefully a storage area is what we {I} am hoping for.... Dirt floors for now. I do not like the "clay" base used down here as it becomes real dusty, might as well stick with the dirt. If dampness is a severe issue I will concrete the floor as mats will just seep the water up and over the top and won't work....I bed heavy shavings regardless of what "base"is there so concrete issues I have none of that some speak of...
If anyone has any ideas for a layout let me know... So far 3 stalls when completed will be on the north side wall, with long windows across the back, steel "livestock" panels 52" up for upper stall dividers, planks for lower stall walls... using 4' round tube gates for stall door. Our horses will be able to see but not touch each other when they are in their stall and hang their heads out over their door/gate only, keeps for no biting or aggressive food problems. The sides and back of the barn are still up for a conversation on how to weather-proof them during storms. I would like to do a channel and slide clear plexiglass in so light in but nasty weather is kept out...or we may just build shutters but that will darken the interior tremendously... So... Our thought is to make it like a modified "T" with the aisle-way so each horse can get in out of the sun, weather and not be cornered by another horse just in case someone has a bad day & attitude. We are still torn on stall size of 12'x12' or 10'x12' boxes. Obvious difference would be a wider aisle...stalls will stay 12' wide as it works perfect with my posts for corners... Roof is 9'6" high so till we are completely built my horse trailer could go under or my husbands car trailer if need be...
Our fence will be plank fencing with a 100'x150' arena for my son to practice ride in {he is disabled} safely. The adjacent area surrounding and by the barn will be a dry lot area for the horses to hang out in...we are working on also fencing another 2 acres of grazing land in and my neighbor has offered us use of their 3 acres and my other neighbor has offered me a chance to put our horses out with her 2 occasionally on her 7 acres as I also watch hers carefully when she is away.... I have really nice neighbors...
So,....I need to open a photobucket/snapfish account or something to share pictures...of course non of mine fit the parameter of the site, all are to big!! Suggestions from anyone on where I should go to and do this, hopefully "free"....recommendations please... HELP!!!!

I am so excited for you that the barn is going up. and for the stalls. remember the bigger the stall the more shavings and work involved. mine are 10 x 12 and a 17 hand horse has plenty of room to lie down and get up. and he is outside all day and in at night. if you shorten the stall you will have room for a small tack room or storage room or perhaps bathroom in the future.
as for photos, perhaps contact mini. or vallha and ask either one, mini uses smugmug i think it is free and i use photobucket.

I have a deadline coming fast... December 25.... My son wants "his" horse and he wants it to come home... "Oh please mom"...he's killing me you know. Now, I just need to find "the perfect horse", afford him, and of course have the barn slightly more finished than currently... then the paddock fences and fence the grazing field.... Oh yes...and still go to work, Christmas shop, feed us and clean the house and do all those other small errands in between that need doing. Hubby is working his tail off so we have the $$ to finish the barn, thank goodness for OT!!! Somehow we will get it done... how do you wrap a horse and fit it under the tree??? {Ironically, I could easily put the horse in my house faster than in the barn...NOPE not happening and NOT going there!!} I am so very tempted to make a trip to NY... the Albany area but just don't have the time I can spare hauling up and down.

How great the barn looks and you should be thrilled. a barn and horses at home is most fun. watching them play and interact with each other. and what a blessing for Michael to have his dreams come true
and if you need to come to me for horse shopping i am 3 hours from suffolk county . and have 3 horses all picked out for you and your family.

Cool, you can just put it up with no prepping the ground first. I think we have to prep frist because of the weather extremes but maybe I'm wrong. How exciting for you guys!!

The barn structure is done!!! Yay.... We now start the stall{s}.... 1 needed so we can shop for Michaels' horse now for santa-sleigh and then continue building and preparing for the other horses to come home. So, if I do it right...I think I can add the final picture of the barn done... Once we do stalls I will start "more" pictures... sun..... s1290.photobucket.com/user/karenspcht/library/?sort=6&page=1

Thanks Mingiz...
Obviously, I am a work in progress getting pictures to post. Now I need to figure out how to not allow others access to anything else I would have there...you know, some sort of "view with out touching" since some {not you guys} would look for trouble to be made...
I can lock the whole thing but...might just do that... hmmm

One reason I don't like photo bucket is that your pics are small and it's a real pain to get them off the site.. I love Smug mug. Even though I pay a yearly fee. You have no problem getting pics off the site. They will even make a zip file of your pics that you want to get off the site.. So much easier to use...They offer a lot more options with your pics...And you can lock down a gallery if you don't want specific people seeing them..

We bought the lumber to start one stall. As we need more stalls we will build them. I know what I will be doing this weekend, Christmas Day {probably} and maybe the next weekend....hubby works and commutes long hours so weekend build time it is. I have begun serious looking...went and saw a real pretty mare but she is not compatible with my son who the first horse is for...and she has obvious navicular with shoes and way of walking. I don't want to buy anothers problems The quest continues...

great news about the barn and i looked at my stalls that are 10 x 12 and they are plenty big for a horse thar is 17 hands and 1300 pounds. if you adjust your stall size you will get more storage area. just a suggestion. as for the horse, you are good at what you are doing and know your stuff. do not let anyone tell you different. when you look. just let the person talk, say nothing. and look at each part of the horse. start with the feet. on each leg and work your way up the leg, not for conformation but for any flaws. remember do not let the seller even know what you are doing. that is a trick of mine. ask them to walk the horse away and than back, than trot the horse away than back, to you. and just look at the feet. and do not say anything. a horse will either be sound or "OFF" if you lunge the horse after than only look at the feet than look at each knee, hock than shoulder and hip, than look at the entire horse to see how it is moving, again speak as little as possible to the seller but listen to them pour the words out of the mouth and you will know if the horse is the one you want , also if it connects with Michael.

Hoping to finish the last stall outer walls tomorrow...then we do the upper dividers and finish the project. Currently I have my husbands truck and the horse trailer in the way under the barn so pictures don't show very much progress. Hoping to remedy that tomorrow.... I'm getting really excited as I see our dreams being finished. I thought I found "the horse" for Michael, went back another day by myself as I was passing by {cough, cough} and decided "No, not this one"...different animal, head bobbing lame and obviously has a problem now seen...we start looking again. Sad, real nice horse but ...no! Knew there was something about that leg that bothered me, sigh. Pictures to follow....again soon.

Good news about the barn, i love works in progress. and your gut will tell you when something is wrong with a horse. just watch the feet as i suggested to you once before, even when they are talking. do not look at the entire horse until you looked at each part . come get this gelding. and the mare. i know he is what you are looking for. rode-the-horse

Oh Jo...it is your advice I followed {THANK-YOU!, Thank-you, thank-you} that had me uneasy. He was so unbalanced moving and muscle not matching like atrophied state..this can't be "new" with how he looks. He seemed not right but he was so dirty it was hard to see. My return I saw and felt what must have been, IDK what uncovering itself.. He is a nice horse, but I need a sound riding horse not a pasture pet in pain or danger. I can and will deal with a lot of issues, but not something this serious it compromises safety in my eyes. It rained all day so not much got done on the barn. We tried but it stinks trying to work in the rain, cold, windy yuck... We finished 1/2 a wall and gave up. Just not smart to be using power tools in downpours and blowing rain... We came in, took hot showers, had some hot tea and cocoa and looked out at the barn waiting for us to finish it...
