Been trying to talk hubby into painting over these wood panels for years, even had an interior decorator tell me they would look better painted with the edges picked out in a different colour but alas couldn't sway him, he keeps talking about staining them, I just walk away, found a funny article about men and wood paneling, he wants to re carpet that room so I told him not until he decided about the panels. Well I talked him into it over the weekend, then last night he said he's not sure again, should have slapped some primer on fast eh?! I mean look how ugly it is....2 big walls of it and 2 smaller on either side of fireplace oh and one more wall, anyone else renovated these, had issues talking spouse round? I actually like the paneling in the dining room - but I had old wood paneling in my dining room as well and painted over it. It really brightened up the room!

We had 1/2 walls of paneling in ours and our sons bedrooms in the old house.... So much work to remove but it was awful looking and even painting would not help... We went to Lowe's or Home Depot and purchased new paneling in a rich, warm tone and put it up after painting the ceiling and walls....huge difference. Brightened the room and made it warm & inviting feeling.
Would you consider if possible leaving 1/2 wall of it like where the board goes across like a chair rail and paint the top...totally different look you would achieve for sure but not take away his security blanket and make such "drastic" changes he fears them....
Men!!!

Some nice transformations....
Only objection I would have was covering up those solid wood cabinets.... My house has oak cabinets in all their glory showing the grain, color and richness through a clear coating to protect the wood from kitchen grime... My old apartment in my in-laws home had solid wood birch cabinets.... idiots {family} yanked them down and put up press-board cabinetry which now is falling apart! Stupid, stupid, STUPID!!
I feel your pain ld.... I cringe when I walk into some homes they are so dark, dreary and drab...a fresh coat of paint does wonders and changes a entire rooms "atmosphere"....

I had paneling in a house i bought and hubby loved the wood. to me it was dingy. grimey and not appealing at all to the house or to my style or my personality. and since i lived in the house too. and especially since the house was in my name. i had the last and final say. so after he said not about a hundred time. i just went out and bought the best paint in could and painted over the wood paneling. what a difference and he loved it. go figure. perhaps just paint over the chair rail. and he still has wood and you have paint that will brighten up the area and make it more formal. and clean and new. besides . you both live there so what can he do. get mad AGAIN? ??

I like the wood,.., it has character cat Altho,., I understand wanting COLOR,., I grew up in a house with very neutral wall color. Our house has a lot more color on the walls. There are sooooo many pretty paint colors available these days. Sorry, I know my response was no help,., it was' wishy-washy'

I'm done with it, he wants to 'talk' about it this weekend which translates to he will do what he wants to do, stuff it, only use that room at xmas and if we have guests anyway, we have this yucky display cabinet thing I hate, I have another one which was way cheaper and second hand that I love well I did talk him into getting rid of the ugly one, he wanted to put it in the games room lol!....I'm like oh yeh that will look great with the pool table, hockey stuff, bar set and leather sofa, idiot, so he makes me put it on kijiji, so I do, I have a couple picking it up this weekend, I tell him this morning, he's like oh great so I have to deal with people this weekend, eh, you wanted to sell it, you think you can do that without dealing with people, the majority of people can't come during the week when you're at work and anyway it's way too heavy for me to lift with a guy, ugh, he bugs me sometimes, ok a lot!
It's going to look awful in there with those panels and a dark carpet that we have chosen, he talked about staining those panels darker, it'll look like count draculas house by the time he's finished with it lol!

Your hubby and mine sound like they are from the same mold, has to be the welsh in em. why not buy a very large painting or print that will fit in side those boxes. or perhaps do a wall paper nice a bright. that way the paneling is still there and it does make it look brighter. as for the people just keep the appointment and let him do the lifting or tell the customers to bring help. rather deal with them alone anyway. i get more sold and done without the dragging down and depression and negativity.

Had to cancel, we had heavy rain Friday night, unheard of in January, it froze, driveway is hell, even if they did get up the driveway here's no way we could safely get it into their trailer, maybe this weekend.
Hubby is staining panels, there's a surprise, I'm going to get all the stuff for him this week, hope he has fun!

So he's in a mood with me as I won't help him sand, I'm cleaning up his mess, that will have to be good enough, he stained one to see what it was like, it looks ok, better than before for sure as they are all sun bleached.
