Is it normal for a dog to act terrified of getting into a vehicle? I haven't pushed Jordan, because we never needed to. He gets his shots and check up when the vet comes out every spring. But, he is getting older and may need extra care in the nearish future. I decided to start desensitizing him. With treats, he got up to the truck, good start! Out of curiosity, I tried to get him into the horse trailer. Treats worked quickly, all the way in. But, he started out very skittish. I have had a pretty limited number of dogs in my life. My puppies have had fairly long lives, as dogs go. All were quite happy to jump into vehicles. My other dog, Holly, hops right in, very happy. I did try having Jordan watch Holly hop in and he wouldn't budge. I don't believe this is normal, but is it too far out of a normal range? He was about 6 months old when I got him from the Humane Society. At that time I just picked him up. I'm older now and he weighs close to 90 pounds. With his fear I don't think it would be wise anyway.

Has he left home much while you've had him?

I am no dog expert but i would imagine the dog is afraid of cars thinking he is going back to the pound. if i were you and you can get him into the car have some meat or favorite food in there, and make it a pleasant place. next time go for a ride around the block. and perhaps bring his best friend with him. this will take time and will need to be done often. my aussie shephard had no car knowledge except when hubby brought her home and after a while i just loaded her into the back of the jeep that i could back up to the steps. and we went for icecream. within a few rides she realized a car was fun.

Our dog Buster wasn't socialized as a puppy, and has a fear of humans, and cars, and just about everything that isn't a part of his everyday life. The problem is that we have never pushed it. He is happy with Honey and I, but a trip to the vet, and he nervous tinkles everywhere. With Buster, he only weighs 60 lbs. I can just heft him in the car when he refuses to go. Jordan sounds like another story.
I would start, just like you have, with treats. Reward Jordan for getting in the car, with a treat, then let him get out. Maybe do it a few times, in a row. Once he is comfortable with that, add starting the car, then a short ride, then maybe longer, and so on.
It's funny, how dogs personalities, are so much like humans. Some are outgoing, while others are so shy.
Jordan is a lucky dog, because he has you. Someone who is willing to work with him so he can overcome his fears.
