We had an amazing german shepherd who passed last august. She was such a huge part of the family, and is missed dearly. The house feels so empty with out her presence, when i come home i still expect her to greet me, there is just such a big void in our home now. My husband talks about getting another dog, and told me whenever i am ready to let him know. But i just cant let go i suppose. Her and i were very close. I feel guilty even thinking about getting a new dog. A best friend is not so easily replaced. How do you know when its the right time for a new pet?

When the time is right for you, you will know. I know that is vague but you will understand once you realize that it is the right time to start looking. Sounds like you are not there yet which is perfectly fine.

Thats what I figured also. I think my husband is in a different place than me because he wasnt as close with her. I have looked at countless pages of dogs available for adoption, and just have no desire or interest in any of them. I just want her. Moving on is such a hard thing to do.

As it's already been mentioned, when it is time, you'll know.
My Niece and her husband lost there chi-poo cross after 11 years, from cancer. They pushed her around in a baby carriage when they went for walks, and that was before she got sick. This was a very pampered, very loved fur baby.
There was no thought of moving on, until a family offered them an unwanted Bishon. He wasn't good with children, and no one wanted him. Reluctantly they took him in.
This new, young dog wasn't anything like their darling Chica. There were so many new things for him to learn, and so many of Chicas old toys to chew up. (oh gasp)Through all the trials, my Niece kept remembering that, no one wanted this little dog, that had no future, before they took him in.
Long story short, that little dog became a much loved member of their family, in no time at all. He has tons of toys, and even his own toy box, he has learned to put them in.
They could never replace the dog they lost, but because their new guy needed them so much, and knowing that, helped them transition into letting a new fur baby into their heart.
It's just a thought, but you might see if there is anyone out there who desperately needs you.

Schoenie was my best friend for nearly 16 years. I still miss him. No one can take his place.
All in good time. There is no due date.

Thank you for sharing that, made me tear up. I'm going to wait until I'm done with my spring semester in may, and see how I feel about it then. At least then I will have the whole summer off to bond with a new puppy or dog if that's what I decide. I've been keeping a close eye on the dogs in my area for adoption in the mean time.

It might be my and my hubby's way of thinking that has us have so many dogs. and horses. we used to have 12 rotties. yup all at one time. they were basically rescued from a horrible breeder. i got all my females from him. and they were the best dogs. the males were rescues. than i had in that group two offspring of my huge male. one rottie female was like glue to my leg. she was always within 10 feet of me. just looking at whomever was near me and giving them the eye. she even pushed on my leg one day when a worker was near me. she looked up at me and i knew he was trouble. i asked him if he did drugs or was a heavy drinker. he said yes and he was fired on the spot. meghan hated him. i also had a huge german shephard that was 135 pounds. tossed outside to make room for a new puppy and hubby drove to maryland to get him. he was on my other hip. we were the 3 in a car and no one dare come near me. god, how i loved those two dogs. meghan had cancer and i had her put to sleep and when wolfgang could no longer walk and ride with me on the golfcart doing my farm chores. i had my horse vet come to the farm to put him down. i was and still am devastated by their loss. since than a aussie shephard. black lab. rescued weiner dog that was tied to a tree and left. he lived a great life for 4 more years. now a corgi, molly that i just had put to sleep in november from a large tumor she was rescued from a cage on statin island and another corgie that i still have that was my daughters dog and he bites. and a chorkie that i bought because she is cute. i think that covers all my dogs for the past years. so you know what hubby and i did?we were down to the chorkie and corgie and we got a mixed breed bella that was going to go to the pound because the owners could no longer keep her.We saw her face on craigs list and read her story and knew we could have room for her in our home and hearts. she will never ever replace my two hip dogs. but she will have a great life and i will love her for always. you just should bite the bullet as the time will never be right until that dog crosses your path. it could be a photo or a look and you will know. either next week, or next month you will want that dog. you will never replace the one that was your best friend but will your best friend want you to be alone? and wouldn't your best friend want you to spread the love and make another dog happy?? I bet he would. smileys-dogs-642861

Nothing will replaced your friend. But one day you will see one that catches your attention and for some reason or another it will be the one you decide to get. It will come when you least expect it. smileys-dogs-171634

We had two mixed breed dogs that we adopted from our local shelters. They were with us for many happy years and both lived to be around 17 years old. I lost them both due to old age and it's associated issues about a year apart from each other. After the second one was gone we decided that we didn't want another dog, at least for a while. With the dogs gone our house just felt so empty, but I still didn't feel like I was ready for another dog. We went without a dog in our lives for 4 months, until one Friday when I was watching the local news and they did their regular Friday segment called "Best Friends Friday" where they highlight a few shelter animals waiting for adoption. When the dog of the week came on the screen something just clicked in me and it was like love at first sight! I told my husband about her, and how cute she was, and I just kept going on and on and on about her, until he finally told me to just go down to the shelter and adopt her already! I adopted her the very next day and she's been with us for 4 years now. When the time is right for you, you'll know!

Horselady, thank you for sharing! I cant imagine 12 rotties at once, Thats amazing! Yes I can relate, karma was my hip too, always there by my side, never letting me out of her sight...Im sure when its the right one I will know. And you are right, she would want me to share my love with another dog at some point. Mingiz, i think so also. Right now it seems like that day will never come but Im sure it will. Terry, what a great story! I feel the same way, my house feels so quiet and empty with out her. I look forward to the day that i find the right dog again

keep looking. one day those eyes will just speak to you or the story is going to tug at your heartstrings. just leave yourself open to it and the new best friend will show up. and yes those 12 rotties were amazing to have all around me at one time. but most of them were kept in kennels until play time. thankfully not all of them in my small house at one time.
