My grandmother called this morning to tell me that Mister laid down twice while eating breakfast this morning but got right back up and continued eating.
I went straight over and he is shifting his weight back and forth between his back feet and then laid down a few times while I was there. He is nibbling at hay and grass and cleaned up what he dropped at breakfast. No heat anywhere in feet or legs. No lameness/soreness. Gut sounds from what I could hear without a stethoscope. Not acting in distress at all. I really don't think he's colicking.
He will act "normal" and rest on all four legs but then a few minutes later he starts acting like he is sore in his hind end and shifts his weight back and forth (about 30-60 seconds resting one back leg, then switches to the other). When he lays down, he isn't rolling like a colic roll but half heartedly rolling. I didn't want to give bute in case the vet needed to see him but maybe I will this afternoon to see if it helps?
Any thoughts? I called the vet but he hasn't called me back. I came on in to work as I really don't think whatever is going on is life threatening, just going to keep an eye on him.

That is odd.
Did you check under his tail and between his legs to make sure there isn't anything stuck that might be irritating him? Maybe his sheath is dirty?
Is there any sensitivity over his kidney's or around his SI Joint?
Hopefully the vet gets back to you soon.
Edited to add: Did your Grandma happen to notice if he was doing this before he started eating? Laying down frequently during meals could indicate ulcers, but I have never heard of hind end shifting going along with it.
Please keep us updated.

Actually what I meant to ask was what was it like this morning, has it been changeable the last few days, frosty?

Weather hasn't really changed in a number of days - highs in the 60s lows in the 30-40s (*F).
He is passing gas. I didn't check around his kidneys or SI joint. Will do that this afternoon. He did lay down once as my g-m was going out to feed. Then twice while he was eating but it was a quick down and then up again.
According to family, he seems normal but they are just watching for signs of colic, not really experienced enough to notice other things.
Vet's office called and said it must be a full moon with all the emergencies they have had today. I still haven't talked with the vet directly but he has my message and I am sure will get back to me when he can. I don't think this is an emergency and I'm not sure there is really any reason for him to come out at this point. I wish Mister could just tell me what was wrong....

The time Dax was acting weird he was doing the back leg shifting, getting down but not really rolling like colic rolling, I got vet out and he had gut sounds(should have checked myself, I panicked, always do with him!), she said sometimes they just get a mild upset tummy, that's how it shows, I think he slid and fell in the ice and that's what caused it as I noticed his hoof had been chipped oddly.
Wondering if Mister had a fall in the field got a little stressed and upset himself a bit like Dax?
I now have that 911 syringe stuff for little episodes.
Hope he is ok, the fact he's still showing interest in food is good:)
Dax would also stomp the back feet now and again, like they do when they have deer flies biting them.

How is Mister tonight? He isn't shifting his weight from his front to back like they do with sudden onset laminitis??? More often seen in front feet, but it occurs in hind too.... The shifting laterally...only his hind or he is restless on his fronts too? He would also be uncomfortable enough to go down then get up as a new episode kicks in....looking for relief. sorry, not wishing anything of this magnitude on anyone... You did have a bad cold front just hit....if he is on grass.....

LD what is the 911 stuff?? and i have my tb stallion act all weird last night. i feed him and he always bangs his bucket against the wall and last night he just took a nibble and stood in the corner. i gave him some hay and he nibbled at it, i turned him out in the indoor arena and left him there all night and this am he was back to his normal loud self. i remember he did this between winter and spring. just off. and i too did not give him any bute. wanted him to just deal with the discomfort and not think he was ok . so perhaps mister does have an off day, keep his food soft for a while and i try to keep 5 pounds of bran in the freezer for when i want to give them a soupy dinner with bran mash .

Hope Mister is doing better this morning!
I have also heard great things about that 911 paste. Going to pick some up the next time I'm in Greenhawk.

Mister is back to his normal self. vet thinks it was probably a very mild colic that resolved itself. i soaked his hay cubes really well tonight and he is definitely drinking his water. thanks for all the thoughts and well wishes .

Just saw this MM,., and glad to hear Mister seems to be back to normal I thought colic instantly,., sounds like you did all the right things. I would definitely have put a call into the vet, just so vet was aware in case things got worse. Glad he seems to feeling better, definitely keep an eye on him for a few days in case symptoms reappear. keep us updated!

Just seeing this too. Colic is such an issue with horses, all of a sudden and for "no" reason. Relieved that Mister resolved it himself *whew*
Thanks for the link LD

I'm feeling rather colicky myself right now. I made my favorite sugar cookies with poppy seeds and of course I ate too many... oh dear. I always have those new Alka Seltzer antacids/antigas chewies which help a lot better than Tums or Rolaids or, gag, Alka Seltzer. I wonder if they'd work for horses or dogs? They're like candy. Makes a person wonder?
