Thanks, sometimes a person never knows what to do or if they should say something since lately I've been getting "lessons" that there are definitely times to keep it to myself. Each interaction is like a test... I need a nap Today we went in the AM just to play with Peaches. Bought some turquoise glitter, put a heart on her right shoulder and a 7 stem menorah on her right hip, looks more like a tree, that stuff isn't easy to work with, but it was kinda fun anyway. She stood still for a long time just being brushed and petted and fancied up with no halter at all. I need a lot of that kind of do-nothing, easy going time, otherwise my nerves just become shot. We'll go back in a couple hours to change her bandage and give her antibiotics. I add water to the SafeChoice so it mixes better and it gets all smooshy, so I scoop it out with my fingers and she licks them off. No nibbles, just a nice gentle slurp Ahhh... no pressure, need more of that kind of thing

Isn't it funny how safe choice becomes a whole different feed when you just add water. I love the way they slurp it up, as if they think it is candy. Sometimes I will add a little something to their hot mash for special occasions. On Thanksgiving day, they all got a cup of apple sauce. On Christmas they will each get a candy cane. I put their treat in the bucket first, then a quart of safe choice, followed be a quart of beet pulp, followed by 4 quarts of chopped alfalfa. I add a tsp. of salt on the top than pour a gallon of hot water over the whole thing, and let it sit for 30 to 40 minutes to soak up. Each horse gets their own bucket. When I feed them I turn their bucket over in their feed pan and the whole thing just plops out, sort of looking like a layer .

Diamond, you run a four star restaurant!
Today there was a lesson with a half dozen girls carooming around the arena when Gerald, Peaches and I got there. They are some of the rudest people! They have no control over their horses, don't even consider that others may need to traverse the arena without getting hurt. And of course, a grey horse with a pissy attitude which Peaches really got cranked off at is ridden by a girl with half a brain. A sorrel and this grey both were dashing by Peaches when all of a sudden Peaches turned her back to nail the grey... it would have been funny if it weren't so dangerous. Luckily momentum solved most of it as well as Gerald getting Peaches back in to line... oh man!
Anyway, I got a hold of Peaches and said, let's get OUT of here! So we went out the office!! into the driveway and walked up and down the driveway until we were all breathing easier. What a mess! Something to look forward to on my own I guess, not looking forward to that BUT Peaches stood quite nicely while I changed her bandage *whew*
This is the last week of changing bandages and Saturday she gets her stitches out. Cross your fingers!

In the horse world, each horse insists that their place in the herd, be maintained. They enforce the rules with hooves and teeth. Unfortunately, when you put inconsiderate young people into the mix, things can get out of hand in a hurry. Poor Miss Peach was only reacting, to the very bad manors, of a big grey horse, when it wasn't that poor horses fault at all.
It is to bad that lessons for youngsters, don't start with learning how horses communicate with one another, and how to be respectful horse riders. It isn't only the young riders that can be a challenge, but there are a lot of adults that are pretty brainless too. Unfortunately horses don't come with an owners manual, to instruct their riders, on how to be safe, and respectful.
It sounds like you and Gerald handled the problem, and no one was hurt. Thank goodness

Well, that grey horse is a bit of a witch So today I went there after work to change Peachie's bandage and give her the medicine... been raining all day and now the temps are below 30, what a muddy horrible mess. Peach was entirely mud on one side, which makes a person wonder if she slipped? but then how did she do it so perfectly 1/2? I couldn't get the halter over her nose, which has been a problem since Friday after the 3 hr lesson Andrea had "teaching" Peaches to take the bute syringe. Said she also found that Peaches' needs her teeth floated, so that'll be Wednesday. But it makes a person wonder, doesn't it? Why if Peaches needs her teeth floated does now all of a sudden I can't halter her?! Andrea must of hurt Peaches during the lesson. Now this is where HL4L will tell me I'm catering to Peaches, but I was feeding the bute in her food rather than fight with her to give it by syringe. I mean, if Peaches isn't at the level of training to take a syringe, then why fight it? Work on it, but don't fight it. I know Peaches and she'll come around, I've wormed her by syringe over the years and have gotten it down from an hour and a half to less than half an hour, which I consider a success. In fact, the last lesson I was able to fiddle with her tongue and all of that. So what's the victory to get Peaches a syringe of bute when now I can't halter her without a fight?! So anyway, I didn't get the bandage changed, I'll need help to do that tomorrow.

Sorry you had an off day.
You know I could tell you about how I carry three buckets of hot mash out to the corral. I point to the gate and tell my horses OUT!! and they all three leave the area. They stay behind the open gate while I dump their buckets into their food pans, then come in to eat when I call them, and say come on.
That would be such a 3/4 empty crock of crap, because that is the only thing they do mostly ok, most of the time. That is it. They are a one trick pony.
If I wanted you to think I really had a handle on my horses, and their training I wouldn't tell you about how sometimes, I can chase Diamond around for a half hour before she decides I am sufficiently tired enough, to allow me to halter her. How about, how I give up and stand on a step stool to bridle Chief.
Now to give Stormy his wormer,,, I need to have a halter, a bridle, and a whole pocket full of treats. Step 1 Show him I really do have treats. Step 2 Put on the halter. Step 3 Show him the bridle, then give him a treat. Step 4 put the bridle on, then take it off and give him a treat. Repeat step 4 several times. Step 5 As soon as he thinks that all I want him to do, is to except the bridle, grab the reins under his chin slip the wormer out of my back pocket and squirt it in his mouth a fast as I can. Step 6 Offer him a hand full of treats, so he won't spit the wormer back out. Step 7 Remove the bridle and give him a few more treats. And of course Step 8 is always Take a shower to get the wormer out of my hair.
Even the best trained horses have their off days, and even the highest paid trainers have lots of moments you will never see on a video.
The best thing about you a Peach, is how much you love her. I don't know if horses understand love, but they do understand respect, and kindness. Any way you look at it, it is time well spent.

I know I should have tried at it longer. It took a bit of time to where I could buckle the halter around her neck. So it would have taken longer to get to where I could have gotten it over her nose. How long, do doubt hours. I had hours, it was the end of the day. She doesn't care that it was raining or that she had her supper but I hadn't. Those weren't important, only to me. I don't like to fight and there it is. I do have patience and time but last night I guess I didn't see me doing any of it. In retrospect of course I could have kept doing what I could do and try but I thought I would simply go in early this morning when no one would be there, I could get Peaches into the indoor with just the halter around her neck and then lunge her until she figured it was easier to get the halter on than not. But Gerald said it wasn't a good idea because it would just be too slippery this early before the ice melts later this afternoon when I usually go.
So I sent a note to Andrea to help me. She said she'd do it which isn't what I asked. She said she has no problems getting Peaches halter on. Gerald did. So I doubt she can do it easily either. I think Andrea has fallen off the pedestal I put her on by telling me that but who knows, I'll have her halter Peaches while I watch, then she can take it off and I can try.
We shall see.

Well, guess what?! A little wobble but I got her halter on first try! YAY! Who knows what goes on in that horse's fuzzy little brain, huh? Andrea gave me a little bundle of hay to give Peaches as a reward for first putting the rope around her neck and then when I get the halter on. Now I don't believe in treats for doing what she's supposed to do, praise yes, treats no and especially not Peaches because she can be SOOO annoying, so I only feed her n a pan. Oh well. BUT the funny thing was I was so concerned to get this thing done quickly I didn't have enough hands to handle the hay and fiddle so I put the wad of hay IN MY MOUTH until I could give it to her after I got the halter on! Was spitting out hay while I led her into the arena What I'll do for my Peachie-pie. AND she was excellent in the cross ties. So maybe Andrea is doing some good here.... I sure hope so!

Oh Dear,,, you almost made me spit my beer onto my computer screen. I can only imagine what Andrea would have thought if she had seen you putting the halter on Peach, while YOU were eating her hay. LOL
I guess holding the hay in your teeth, is better that stuffing it into your bra to keep your hands free, although,,, I imagine if you were that close to hay, some of it must have ended up in your bra anyway.

Ha! Way way too many layers for anything to get that close to my underwear I see you This afternoon I have to leave work early so Peaches can get her teeth floated, then I go to the dentist for my appointment. And wouldn't you know, a couple days ago I was innocently eating some licorice and for some reason my teeth hit each other on the edge and cracked/crushed off the edge of the lowers. I mean really?! Is it that important I have even more problems with my teeth? Its not enough that dental insurance doesn't cover anything expensive or that I have to have new problems in addition to not having enough money to fix the problems I already have?! How do I even get out of bed in the morning? And yeah, it isn't lost on me that I have it a lot better than Northern Horse Girl, which makes me feel even worse that I'm such a sissy...

, I clashed my teeth together once having a nightmare and broke all the bottom ones on one side, dentist couldnt believe it lol! Don't feel bad ever about your problems or complaining, there's always someone worse off and NHG hated when people wouldn't complain round her as they felt they weren't allowed to:)

This post made me laugh so hard! First off - I always have hay in my bra - always!!!! Second - I have put some very questionable horse related things into my mouth and always wondered who was training who when I did it. Really some of the wormer doesn't taste too darn bad so I never knew what the fuss was about!
I always have hay in my bathtub drain as I feed 4 horses 3X a day and try to carry the entire bale with me to save on trips from the barn - so I have hay chaff in my hair, in my bra, in my boots - you get the picture.
As for the complaining - I would like to think we are all friends and even though I am not as close as some others on this board I feel NHG would be the first to offer sympathy for the chipped tooth and ensuing medical bills.
Good luck for both you and Peaches with the dentist today!

It's just that there isn't an OH MY!!! I am so sorry, button.

I can't even imagine how tense you would have to be to gnash your teeth that hard! But you know, over and over again, sooner or later they'll weaken and then that last straw (or hay LOL) that broke the camel's back kind of thing. So while I took pix of Peaches getting floated, I can only text them, can't figure out how to upload the stupid things. Right now I went home to brush my teeth before going off to get my teeth floated. The vet said if I see the same equipment at my dentist to get out of there quickly It was $175!!! I hope we can make two more weeks without a vet. I mean good heavens, she's seen the vet more these past two weeks than in the previous two years!!! But the good news is that she was even better for "catching" today. She's not walking up to me like she used to but she did get worked this morning, but she didn't avoid me so that's a relief. I was almost ready to take it personally, like she finally figuring out that I'm the wienie that I'm afraid I am, so embarrassing. I hope that someday I can be less worrisome, insecure and apologetic. It would be like taking super vitamins and how a vacation feels and eating the best milk chocolate in the world if that were ever to happen. Maybe if I can keep my job and I'm on permanent it'll happen easier...

Carshon, why not get a radio flyer red wagon for hauling that bale of hay. i use wheelbarrows anything with wheels not to carry that hay and i too have placed god knows what into my mouth while working with the horses. and i am still here posting away and not any worse for wear. all small steps. and sometimes a few backwards. and i am sure your dentist is more than the peaches.

Just got back, my teefies are all shiny clean, at least the ones I have left And I decided that since I may not be able to keep my job, then all that money I've been saving is going to go for my teeth AND there is a new kind of partial denture that's all plastic, no metal at all and it'll work for me! Two appointments instead of five to get it done and it'll be something like $500 or I pay the $300, either way I'll have all of my teeth again! I haven't smiled with my mouth open in YEARS at least not in public, I do when I'm home alone though and I gotta tell you, it feels good! So that's some good news! I actually have good news! Yay!

That's great news about you and Peaches. I know how hard it is but sometimes we just have to spend that money that we are saving for a rainy day.
Did the vet say how Peachies teeth were before he did the float? Points or waves or whatnot?

Of course I took pictures and equally of course I can't show you but there were points that the vet figured were there for a couple years and one pair were shorter so he evened them out.

Well I'm sure she will be a lot more comfortable now (well once the initial ouchiness from the floating goes away).

A stressful day at work, followed by a stressful day at the barn. Roads are slippery too. Just don't get no better than this. Cried on the drive back to the apartment. I want to go home and I want a mom to love me. I'm not getting either so you guys will have to put up with me. I was able to give Peaches her medicine but I wasn't able to change her bandage. Oh well. Her leg will keep. Watched some girls at their lesson, one little girl is just not a rider yet like the other ones. She was flopping all over, poor thing. She was so scared she was crying too. I don't blame her I was afraid for her. It was awful, the horse was crowhopping and it was all I could do to stand there and not flinch all over every time. I hope I have one of those nights that "heals", I know I'm on a learning curve and I know learning can be harsh and I know that getting it so that harsh is easier is one of the lessons but I also know that it would be nice to have something sweet happen to me. Tomorrow can't go by fast enough. I'm taking Monday as a floating holiday, was thinking I could go home but because of I need to take care of Peaches I can't go. The drive is too much to bear right now anyway. I could ask Andrea but she's already charging me for helping me and I don't know how much she'll charge so I'm afraid to ask for more help besides its my job to do for my own horse and not leave it up to someone else, she has enough to do. And I need to be enough of a horseman to get over myself and take care of my own horse. I guess I'm babbling now, good night all. Sleep tight and sweet dreams
