Understandably I'm so very sad Peachpit got hurt. All of this forced stuff is definitely learning. Its simply so sad.
Thank you for the support. I've been on emotional overwhelm for a long time. I wish I could just go home.

Sorry to learn that Peach got hurt. It sounds like it was pretty nasty. I'm glad she's going to be ok. Frustrating timing for sure, but things can still be learned while she is healing. Hang in there.

Except for not taking the bute by syringe yesterday, she did everything I could have wanted. She did move around a bit when I was changing her bandage but not a lot considering.
As far as the syringes go, we worked on that for over an hour, I was dripping in sweat an was the one definitely the worse for wear. I'm not going to fight her when she ate it in Safechoice just fine. That stuff is so HARD I needed both hands and then some to get it out of the tube.
The vet is having me use a special kind of vet wrap, forgot the name, but you can use it only once and Holy Cow is it expensive!!! 7 rolls, $59! The stitches come out in 12 days. I have 9 rolls so I need to see if I can order them online for less. Oh well, its for Peaches so its worth it.
I'm actually thinking that maybe she is ride-able by me

I feel your pain when it comes to getting a horse (or in my case, a pony) to take their oral medicine. Frustrating and exhausting indeed! If she will take her bute in her Safechoice, then I would just give it to her that way. Much less stressful for you and for her.
Yikes, that vet wrap is expensive!!!!

Our mare was getting bute in her feed once a day and we just slightly wet her feed (also SafeChoice) and sprinkled the Bute on it. That way we knew she was getting it all.

I've been working on mouth stuff with Peach for YEARS. No wonder folks think Apps are stubborn! So in the meantime we won't fight "City Hall". There is brute powder so next time if goodness forbid there is one. This is the first injury other than seedy toe thank goodness and she's 16.
The antibiotic is powder so yeah a little water helps but she definitely cleans her plate.

...bute comes in paste, powdered and tablets. Different manufacturers I think even flavor their bute paste.... I personally get bute tablets and grind them myself, then put the powder in a baggie so I am sure the grams is accurate horse receives... Not sure how the prices are anymore....
Try United Vet Equine, Valley Vet, Jeffers Equine for those supplies. Get a script from the vet for bute and have it filled at one of these places {you need a hard copy script or a call-in from the vet himself}. It can save you a substantial amount of $$ not buying from your vet. In a emergent situation, you buy what you must....then search around...

Yeah, stuff like that is definitely cheaper from a supply house. I would not get the paste again, what a hassle but since she eats it up in grain it'll work. Only 4 more days including today.

Aw, but I'll focus on the good, she looks amazing with a rider on board, very relaxed, love the arena area, I have the same tin on my kennel roof, good to hear she is doing so well with Andrea, hopefully when she's all healed up she will pick up fast where she left off:)

I have taken a hammer on a piece of paper to wack the bute and put it into the grain. even made holes in apples and slid a piece of bute into those pieces. does not pay to fight it will only escalate with us loosing the battle. and i would imagine regular vet wrap will work just as well cheaper too. if you need to wrap with something to keep it up use duck tape. i have heard of people using panty hose. just cut the foot part off and slide over the hoof up the leg.

Hey, I remember garter belts and the twisting of the elastic behind my leg, stockings falling toward my knee, hiking them up all day NO THANKS.
Vet wrap would be near impossible to stay on like this stuff, its much thicker, sticky and so works MUCH better than vet wrap. Since no one is there to fix it throughout the day I'll pay the extra money to know it stays on well. And it sure does. Sure its expensive, but gosh, it works really well.
I sent a pix to the vet and he said it looks really good, which it does, amazingly so. I'm waiting to hear what activities she can't do. I'd like her to get more experience trailer loading. Yesterday we practiced backing up straight and even side passing, we were both getting better at it. I did a little bit with mouth handling and Andrea will pick up lessons today on ground stuff too. I don't lunge past a fast walk because I don't know how much pressure is okay, hopefully the vet will get say a trot is okay. Increasing speed on the lunge line gets her emotions up and we need practice being calm.

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. I couldn't exercise Peaches very much before I did her bandage stuff because there were too many lesson going on and there isn't light outside and we'd have to walk through two horse pastures to get to the outdoor exercise area, which I hate. So Peaches was particularly energetic, then the air nailer really set her off something fierce.
So Andrea is holding her and I'm trying to do the bandaging when Bob, a nice fellow but a know-it-all comes over and starts making clucking and kissing sounds and pushing on her to calm down! I said, just so you know, I make those sounds to speed her up! Then he wants to bring out a twitch or a chain! I nixed that idea. You try to hurt Peaches to get her to comply and she'll have an even worse case on your hands. Then he keeps up with the kissing sounds and then whistling and I repeat that those sounds are to speed her up. Finally he leaves.
I'm sure Bob thinks I spoil Peaches and that's why she was misbehaving but she is getting the grain for the medicine, she isn't getting her exercise, there's a strange noise, yeah, she'll act up. She wasn't being mean, just wasn't standing still. And how dare you ask Andrea if you should get a chain when I OWN THE HORSE! Don't treat me like that.
A pretty emotional day anyway, thought I was finally feeling better about myself and my prospects when I had to face the board of directors at work and talk about my review. It was positive but very stressful.
Tomorrow Gerald comes down to visit for the weekend. He can't bring Coda because my apartment doesn't allow pets, but it will be more relaxing because we won't have to worry about leaving Coda alone or in the car or something.

Please try to focus on the positives from the board - you are a good and knowledgeable employee- trying to do all of the right things. Peaches accident and treatment have you on edge. She is a horse - she is going to move around. I have not been a breeder, trainer or show-er of horses (or a googler for that matter) so I do not expect mine to stand stock still in new situations. My animals (like my children) are spoiled, willful and the loves of my life. Let him cluck and whistle just do what you are going to do.
Don't let anyone make you feel small around your animals. You obviously sought out Andrea and this barn to better your relationship with Peaches - not everyone needs to know the back story - YOU ARE DOING FANTASTIC! Peaches will be fine - but I think we would all like to see pics of her wearing garters!

LOL Peaches wearing garters... she does have stockings! We took pictures and even of a video of her being led by nothing more than her will and even changing leads to stay with me as I change directions... but can I get the freaking pictures off the phone?! HECK NO! Have NO idea where they went *sigh*
Lord, I think you are very right, I will do my best to keep my own counsel and slow down. I always compare what is going on in the moment to answer the question, "Is Peaches rideable?" Probably not the best question to be asking right now.

Oh dear, isn't that the worst. You take pictures of your horse being awesome, then your phone wont let you share them. I am closing my eyes and imagining Miss Peach wearing her stockings, and staying right there with you, as you change directions.

Good for you for tell that man what you like or not like. he has no right to try and work with your horse with the trainer there. and for a twitch i never used one but a couple of times and that was for a rude obnoxious boarders horse that needed his shoes pulled. so good girl keep up with the lessons they are paying off.
