I'm convinced that they do. This is an argument that I had with the woman who was training dogs out of the facility I owned. The one that almost ruined me because I didn't sell it to her, but I digress...
She said that they act like they feel guilty because they're picking up that we're mad at them. I told her that when I come home and someone's acting guilty that's how I know one of them has done something naughty even before I find it and have a reason to be mad. Out of four dogs I can even tell who it was although Bella will often be upset, too, even when it's not her.
Last night Brodie was being very needy and wanting lots of cuddles and even doing things like tucking has face down between me and the arm of the couch with his paws over his head. He loves to be snuggled and is a cuddly dog but it was out of character for him to be that much of a suck. Later, I went to the bedroom where the computer is (the office) and realized that the ginger cookies I'd left in there were gone. I picked up the empty bag while he was watching from the doorway and then he ran and sat in the living room looking very guilty.
I bet all of you have stories like that!
