I have found most of the snakes just want to be left alone, if they see me (scent me) they are gone in a different direction quickly.
They keep down my mole, field mice and rodent issue from the huge fields surrounding my property. If the snake is aggressive, challenges/confronts me when I back off...
DEAD!!So far I have had only one aggressive snake that I could not get away from, I tried.
My son heard me
screaming for help over the sound of him hundreds of feet away cutting our grass on the lawn tractor... he flew to me on it, dropped the blade to the ground and went back and forth many times... then made sure it was dead..
.it was rather chopped into many pieces.I of course then needed to pick up the darn thing so the dogs wouldn't eat the remains.
I described it to my local farm supply store... sounds like I had a moccasin from what they said. It was baby time and they travel at that time to safeguard the young as they "hatch" (?) from other predators.
This snake just took on the wrong person.
I now carry a
razor sharp flat bladed shovel with me with a long handle. Don't know how much good it will really do, hope to never need it nor find out...but gives me some reassurance and a little piece of mind.
Most people do not realize that a snake can spring at least the length of their body...
Mingiz, just remember they are out there...more than you realize. Wear heavy thick gloves (leather) when putting your hands in unseen or covered areas...boots and pants too.
You saw one...how many have you not seen that saw you though is what everyone says to me... be careful and vigilant.
Carrying a gun is probably our next thing we need doing.
Wildlife is abundant where I am... feral pigs, coyote, alligator, bear and snake plus more.
I have no knowledge of handling a gun, so need much safe instruction and to get over my "fear" of the thing.
I lived before in a area where the only ones who really carried guns were either the police or the criminal... no handguns or shotguns/rifles were ever prominently displayed.
Down here, everyone has gun racks in their trucks, women..most carry a handgun and can shoot it and use heavy guns of rifle & shotgun type with deadly accuracy.
Criminal activity and violence is like non-existent where I am, partly because people are armed to defend themselves from animals(4 leg and slithering kind) and just not the nature of the people here in this area...however, if you want to mess with any of them...they will oblige you in defending themselves... women, men and children even young ones are gun savvy.
And yes, we have bugs, large ones at times. Mosquitos are huge right now...and the cutest little frogs, 1/2 the size of your pinky nail. Those I can deal with, already wore out a fly-swatter, now have an "industrial strength" made one. Best I found though is the spraying automatic horse fly spray machine... positioned outside in my garage and our back door took care of most of the "bug" issue in about 2 hours...poof...GONE!
