So my cat Casey (about 11 years old) has a habit of occasionally not using the litter boxes (just peeing, he always poops in the boxes). I think it all started about 9 years ago when a friend temporarily moved in with his 3 cats (it was after Katrina and his house had 3 feet of water...on the second floor). Anyway, I guess this upset Casey and he started peeing in one particular place in my house, even after the other cats left.
He is prone to UTIs and will pee more outside the litter box when he has those but he also sometimes just randomly does it (even after I clean the boxes). I have 3 boxes downstairs and one box upstairs for him and Sophie.
It got so bad (the smell), I ended up replacing my carpet in the main part of the living area of my house with laminate. But we still have our problem.
I have bought some of the spray to keep him from marking/peeing there but that doesn't always work. Should I just give up and put a box there so he doesn't ruin my floors? What about that expensive stuff they sell at the vets' office (I forget the name)? Should I try that?
I'm also worried about when/if I move (a slight possibility in the next few months). Will he find a new spot in the new house to pee in?
I scoop the boxes fairly regularly, but I must admit, not daily.
HELP! This is so aggravating and I don't want him to teach Sophie it is ok to go outside the box. |

All I can do is tell you what my cats have "told me". I now have 5 cats in the house, and have read that you need to have at least one more litter box than you have cats. I have 7 litter boxes, and I do get them cleaned everyday but not always at the same time. (my bad). I have noticed that the cats seem to pee in some of the boxes, and poop in others. I have no idea how they came up with this agreement, but although there some intermingling of the excrement, there is always more poop, or pee in each of the litter boxes.
I have no idea if cats would rather not pee in the same place where they poop, but mine seem to prefer to keep the two body functions separate, most of the time.
Maybe you could try giving Casey another litter box in a different location.

I'd try putting one where he goes that he shouldn't. An enclosed one of it's out in the open. I got rid of a really nice cat because of this and he ended up being killed by coyotes at the barn he was rehomed at. I still feel so guilty.
