Well since I am riding bareback right now, I guess I am in! Of course I drop my stirrups quite often when I go on long trail rides but being in a western saddle, it's not quite the same thing is it?!

LOL Ok maybe no stirrup walk? No need to be intense if you snap a pic, it counts!

Like Mister I ride Western, so no stirrups isn't at all the same as English. Winter boots are always no stirrup riding. So what is it about English riding that builds leg muscles if you don't use stirrups? I don't see how you guys balance as well as you do and jumping? How Do You Do It?!

It's hard to explain how "we" do it lol. You use a lot of your inner thigh and calves to keep you holding on all while not trying to pinch yourself in place at the knees. end result... pain, tears and quite the work out! Trotting is the worse if you have a bumpy horse... it's sometimes easier to just post without stirrups sometimes. It's like when your coach tells you to canter you just think omg, a break! LOL

I ride better with no stirrups any day....saddle or not. When I ride with, I am more prone to a un-glorified dismount as I rely on the stupid things and balance in/on them. Without, I use my leg to stay astride and communicate better.... Now I just need to ride enough to rebuild those leg muscles...I think everyone should have a bone-jarring trotting horse...you learn to absorb that action and sit quietly... Once you learn how to absorb that action your body never forgets "the how" either...

I love riding bareback. :-) my favourite way. I think all should learn how to ride bareback before going in saddle.

That's how I learned to ride first too Lip - on an ornery old mare with no saddle and just a halter. I had to walk her to the far end of the property, try to jump on her quick and ride her back to the barn. It's amazing I didn't hurt myself. But I do believe it gave me a good feel for how horses move.

Are we talking just dropping the stirrups or actual bareback? Or either? I'm lousy at riding bareback and always was, even when I was a kid. I fell off so often it was a joke. Now I rarely ride bareback. Plus I don't like getting my butt all dirty. I can do no stirrups, though. I'm not sure when I can ride again thanks to the cold sensitivity but I'll see what I can do.

I learned bareback and wirh no bridle, just a piece of baler twine round the neck lol!
My friend and I used to go steal people's horses and ride them when they weren't around, we even rode in the pitch dark, we nearly got caught once, funny thing was years later I ended up friends with that girl and we rode and competed together, she always told me the story about how she nearly caught the horse riding thieves one night, I never ever owned up to it!
The old guy along the road caught me riding his daughters smallest mare with a piece of twine, he came out and gave me the saddle and bridle, showed me how to tack up etc then his daughter who was older than me started teaching me, we went on many rides together, she was awesome:)
I feel bad now as I know I could have hurt a horse, maybe rode it when it was sick without knowing but when you're young you don't think of these things, sorry everyone!

Good job Lip!!! I somewhat participated this week, I had my lesson on Friday and I coolled out no stirrups I know it's not much!! I rode a deferent horse this week but I have a feeling we will be having a no stirrup lesson this month. Just the way my instructor was talking... I might be in for it!! NGH doesn't have to be bareback, just do what your comfortable with And omg LD that's hilarious!!! It's pretty nice of the people to take you in and teach you, clearly you were motivated to ride!!!!
