Can I just put some poop in a ziplock and take it to vet or do I have to pick up kit or something?
I used the weight tape on Dax and he's not really that overweight, I do worm regularly but am wondering if it might be a worm belly he has, can't still be grass can it?

My understanding is that you need to get a piece that is on top of the pile (not one that has touched the ground) and it needs to be pretty fresh. Call your vet and ask how they prefer to get this lovely present.
I've thought about having one done on Mister. Maybe when the vet is here next week I can send one in with him, just to see.

For humans, the stool needs to be put into a preservative within 30 minutes, but we send ours (human) off to a reference lab. I would check with the vet to see what they want. I imagine they will look at it under a microscope at the clinic, so a preservative might not be necessary. When I asked about a fecal check for worms, my vet pulled on a glove and went after his own specimen. Ha ha,,, I will never forget the look on Stormys face when he did that.
If you need to collect a fresh specimen yourself, I would just put the horse in a clean trailer for a minute or two. That should get you a fresh pile, or two,,,,, or three, or four.

I agree with Diamondgirl but to add, it should be refrigerated as soon as possible, and the sample is only good for 48hours.
definitely a good thing to consider then you can at least rule that out

We've never done one, we just worm regularly. It will be interesting to see what they say. Any idea what they charge to do that?

When my vet comes to get fecal they put it into a plastic bag and leave it in the car until they get back to the office. . i usually worm everyone on the farm 4 times a year. and have fecal done only when the horse looks like he might be overloaded.

I know vet's around here are starting to change their protocol. We deworm our heard 4x a year but studies are saying that it's healthier to get fecal's done on the heard 2x a year and treat them accordingly. Sorta the moral behind that is to not treat something that isn't actually a problem. Go figure now that they are noticing a lot of drug resistance with the wormers they decide to try and change things. Like I said it's still being researched, until then though I'm going to stick to my protocol. food for thought

I just looked at the instructions sent with my sample kit, and they aren't really detailed. Pretty much spoon a bit in and mail it. They don't give a lot of guidance on how fresh it has to be or how quickly they have to get it, or digging around from inside the sample or on top of the pile or any of that. Just says "fresh" and "fill the container." There, does that help? :-)

Still havent got round to doing this, anyway, I now have bags marked and ready, vet needs poop within 24 hours and of course the days I can easily pop in with it the horses arent around to produce any poop or are around but well just dont poop, my horse trailer is still buried in so cant use that method! Watch this space!
