I was thinking the other day while cleaning stalls that perhaps we can use a horse vet board. Type of illness , lets say gas colic. . description of sickness and possible remedies and suggestions for helping the horse to over come it . the description could be out of a vet book and we just post as to our own personal experience and what we did to help or what our vets suggested to do. it needs to be done on a routine basis. so any suggestions are welcome. perhaps on a weekly basis , we just pick out something at random and post it. and we talk it out until the following week. of course as the weeks go by any thread can be updated as the need arises.

Sounds good to me. Being able to have a place to hear what someone did to treat a injury, illness or just for routine care...expanding our knowledge base I think is a great thing always. Being able to include what was done as a interim thing till a vet could arrive to treat a injured or sick animal...well, sometimes those home remedies work well. Or what we have done instead of a vet....we don't always need a vet, but do need some information on a subject.
I would even like to hear about common things such as worming, vaccinations....when you do/did them, with what product and why you choose that over another...and of course administering dosage and {location if a injection} and how to figure that out. Being this would be open to all eyes to see, a disclaimer that we are not vets and don't claim to be or disguise ourselves as them to protect all of us and this site from accusing fingers if someone were to follow "advice" .......

I think it sounds like a great idea. I love learning about all manner of equine medical care and injury treatment. Would be perfect for everything from worming and vaccines to more acute injuries and issues.

What I was thinking we could post a question that we are experiencing. but more than that open a vet book and pick something and post it. we will discuss it and voice our experience with it. from A to Z the medical books are overflowing with tid bits of information. and do not forget the tried and true remedies that have been handed down from generation to generation of horse people. smart horse

Wouldn't that be the health and nutrition section?

could be, i thought it would be a special place to post items from a vet book and we all talk about it. like a dictionary for horses here on the forum. and if anyone has experienced it than they could ,of course, say their experience with it.

It would be a good idea to have a way to search for these topics. I don't know what the algorithm is for the search function but if there were a place, perhaps in the first posting, that had a list of words that would likely used for searches it would help folks find articles when they need them.

"a basic algorithm for division"

Just a suggestion that maybe this should go as a subheading under the health and nutrition board that already exists?

"a basic algorithm for division" Thanks for the tip. I kind of got off track but what I wanted to say was that scientific journal articles each have a special section of the summary with a list of words that can get picked up in a search. Its at the beginning of the article so that search engines run faster and people get their results sooner. It can also be accomplished by an executive summary but who does that?! Let's not make this work. On the other hand if we would try to write about important things in an organized way, "Symptoms", "Treatment", "Results", "Complications", "Contraindications", or something like that, it would help those of us looking for mission critical information at a time when perhaps we don't have the time, patience or presence of mind to read a whole bunch.

The new vet board is going to be up and running later tomorrow night. and it will be near the horse health section. any more ideas or suggestions are appreciated. and the new board is not only for personal ideas or health issues but to actually post an illness from a book or article.than if anyone has had experience with it they can post. of course give credit where it came from.
