So I know you guys like to comb for sale ads and stuff. Zeus, my pygmy buck, is now all alone. The dairy monsters are gone (YAY), but so is his pretty lady. He's devastated, as I am, and is already showing signs of depression. The last time he was without a companion, I thought I'd lose him. He's that dependent. He quits eating after a while. He's a super sweet buck (I'm lucky in that department with him.) and deserves a nice little lady. So my internet searcher friends, I'm having some trouble finding him a little lady. She must be pygmy or dwarf or a mix of those two. We aren't dealing with the bigger mixes or breeds anymore. Not after the hell we've been through with the dairy monsters. Color is a plus but health is a must. She can be any age. Zeus is gentle with the youngsters and I can keep them on a fence line until the little one is older. He'll be content with that. I'm about 45 minutes up from Grand Isle, LA. I can travel up to 2 hours or so away within reason. I'd consider a cheap, close whether just for company, but would prefer a doe. A friend of mine goes to Mobile, Alabama every weekend, so that might be an option too. I haven't looked in the Baton Rouge area yet, and I have friends out there, so that's an option too. Mister'smom, we'll be closer your way this weekend. Anyone wants to help?

I will put out some feelers to my FB friends. I assume you've looked through craigslist?

Isn't he the one that you think chased your female and killed her?

NHG - I think it was one of the bigger, milk goats that chased the female. Those apparently are now gone.

No. This guy is my pygmy. The monster buck was a dairy one and he is no longer on my farm. This buck was also getting harassed by the other buck. Poor Zeus couldn't get much peace with that other buck. Thankfully, that evil creature is gone to someone who has experience with them. He gave that lady quite the hassle to get him loaded, but she managed and knows how to handle a buck like that. Good riddance to bad rubbish!
Zeus is a former bottle baby and is people friendly, very gentle with his does, and is good with youngsters. He's what a pygmy buck should be. I definitely don't want to lose him. It's hard to find a well-behaved buck like that. Poor guy came running up to anyone he saw outside for attention yesterday afternoon.
Mistersmom, I did look on craigslist. The 2 females in Picayune, MS with the straight horns just give me a gut feeling that something's not right with them, especially with those horns, so unless I can't find much else, I'm passing on those. There isn't much else in the area. It's kind of the wrong season for does.

Could you get another buck for now just to keep him company? It seemed like there were more bucks available than does. Or would they fight (even without a doe present)?

Goats can be such jerks. When I was a teenager my parents bought me a brand new saddle they could ill afford and the next time I went to the barn and it was in the trunk of our car their goat jumped in the trunk and scratched the crap out of it, I was so upset. So I took him by the horns and pulled him out of there and away about 50 feet and when I turned around to walk away he ran at me and butted me in the rear and sent me flying.

Why not put your own ad on craigs list, you never know who might be deciding to sell or give away a goat. and perhaps contact the local 4-h and see who has goats in your area. again you never know who might be selling and they do not want to put up an ad .

Yeah, goats can be some brats. The dairy monsters that I sold were hell on hooves. I wound up hating those things. I love my pygmies though.
I was thinking of putting up an ad. A friend of mine is selling one of her does but she's an escape artist. I'd be right back where I was with the dairy monsters escaping all the time. I'm going to pass on that one.
I asked the local feed stores and they have my number in case they find someone. I'm about to call the one a bit farther up. I'll ask our AG teacher as well, we don't have much of a local 4H. I know a couple of farmer's children among my students that I can ask too.
If I get another buck, it'll have to be a whether (castrated one). Two intact males will fight even without a doe present unless they were raised together. There's the odd case that works out, but Zeus has some messed up horns (before I got him) and can't really defend himself as well as he should.

One guy was selling some Nigerian Dwarf does, 3 of them. He wanted all 3 to go together but he wanted $225 EACH, more if I wanted only one. No thanks. Can't afford that when other does are going in the $150 range. Not to mention the drive to get there.
Found one with some gorgeous pygmy babies ready in a month for $125 each. He has black agouti and a caramel agouti with really dark black points. I'm in love! The black stockings on this little girl are adorable! The black agouti ones are adorable too, but my doe that I lost was a caramel agouti with back points, just not as loudly expressed as this little doe. He's an hour and 45 minutes away, so not too far at all and I have friends out that way. I love how clean his set up is too. I'm just worried about Zeus for a whole month.
My husband's aunt lives in Mississippi and she got a got for $20-30, so she's going to try to find the lady's number and we might make a trip out there to go see her and get a goat. I might get 2 at that price!

It'd be to find the time to bottle feed. I bottle fed a set of twins in the summer, but I wasn't at work from 7-3 (leaving home for 6:30 and getting home at 3). Don't know if I'd be able to keep up with a feeding schedule.

We have a new guest at the farm. When I told Dinah's former owner about what happened, she had me bring home Dinah's mother, Penny. Penny has been lonely and so has Zeus. That was the sweetest greeting ever. I wish I had videoed it. Zeus came running up when I called but came greet me before he went greet the little lady. She's likely not going to have kids, but she and Zeus can enjoy each other's companionship while I'm waiting for my little doe to grow. If she does have kids, my friend wants me to let her know, but she has a growth on her belly that we have no clue what it is. It doesn't hurt her and she's older, so we aren't worried about it. We don't know if Penny will stay for good, but it is a win-win for both of us right now. She's a really docile and very friendly goat, so she'll fit in well enough and she already knows me from visiting with my friend. She also doesn't test fences and has to be tricked out of her pen or put on a lead.
I'll get pictures up tomorrow of the lady and of the little lady.

What a great deal, all are happy and content and you are resting easier knowing that zeus is happy again.
