I noticed Ira quidding a little and on thinking about it I haven't had their teeth done in two years, I usually get the horse dentist out who is also a vet, he has a crush thing he walks them into and dopes them and hangs their heads up on a winch so he can see, it always worked good and while he's not cheap I was happy.
Well last time I had osteopath out she was telling me that is actually really bad for the horses muscles due to the dope and being forced up, anyone else heard of this?
Anyway, I called horse dentist and he's booked up till late next week and now I only have 2 horses would prefer if I could find others close by to get done at same time but none of my neighbours believe in horse dentists!
So I guess I'll have to call the vet, I know the vets I normally use haul their heads up too, osteopath said she knows a vet that doesn't, angel Roberts, any albertans know much about her?
Anyway I'll update how it goes and just how bad their teeth are, I had a lot of work done on Dax after I just got him, his tongue and gums were cut up bad from his teeth poor boy.

I always have my vet check teeth when he is here twice a year for check-ups. Usually they only need to be done once a year and he does them himself. He does dope them up and we might hold his head up a bit but it is never tied up. Usually the assistant gets under the horse and just kind of supports the head and neck so the vet isn't on the ground trying to see what he is doing. And often he will do it by feel - file a little, pick head up to look and feel then file a little more.
Anyway, call your vet to see if you can get him/her to do everything all at once.

I use a vet and get the power float done. I've never seen their heads cranked up so high that I'd be concerned. It's a hell of a lot better than getting out the guy that does their teeth with the hoof rasp and just feels around and goes at it and leaves them bleeding. I think your osteopath is being alarmist.

I did hear once of a horse having an issue after having its head suspended during a float. I do not remember what the issue was (something to do with the Atlas maybe?) It seemed to be an isolated thing.
I normally have my horses checked / done once a year unless a problem arises. I have always had it done by a vet, and always a powerfloat.
I've seen it done in specialized stocks as well as in a stall with a rope over the top of the door helping suspend the head. I only ever had an issue in the stocks and that was because my horse was crazy athletic and decided to sit down.
Sounds to me like the osteopath is a little bit of a doom sayer. I think you avoid more harm having them done than by leaving them be.

Cripe...for that price get that trailer done, hooked up and ROAD TRIP.
That is a ridiculous price...we are not doing oral surgery....you are taking sharp edges off the teeth IF they exist...maybe something a little more but WOW...highway robbery with a BOOM attached.
I know some prices seem more up there but that is just ridiculous.
How close are you to Smilie? Or Northern??? What about Apollo??? Or Dream? Or AES? Have I forgotten any from the north??...might make a inquiry to them and see what they think, pay, what kind of float {power or manual} and Who They Use....

I seem to remember paying around $375 -$450 for a float in Medicine Hat. I have not yet checked the prices in the Calgary area (although I am sure they are significantly higher, seems like everything is lol)

I've seen both. My current vet is a large man and he doesn't suspend the horses heads to do them (he also hand floats). He lets the horse put their head at a comfortable spot, I've even seen him kneel down to see everything and all that jazz. He charges $165 The one vet I seen suspend a horses head was a very small woman and she uses a power float. She admitted she doesn't have the strength to hold the horses head and float at the same time. In both situations I have seen it well done. I could see how having their head suspended could potentially have more risks then choosing to not suspend them (horses move, they can panic, ect.) As for the osteopath being worried, I wouldn't be too concerned because generally a float takes under an hour so your horse might be uncomfortable but I don't see it causing any long term damage.

Gosh things are way more expensive where you live. and i thought 200 for exam and pulling 5 teeth was alot plus power floating the rest to get rid of the edges. and the vet only use sedative and did not have to hang the horses head up in the air.

I didn't spend near that when Kovey had his wolf teeth pulled and floated. Under $200. The teeth were checked each vet visit. Riley has had his teeth done twice (I think, oy my memory). Vet was out in September. Said they were fine, but figured 6 months may want to consider. As I will be putting them on the barn schedule for shots etc, he'll get done in the spring. I have asked about 3 vets about teeth floating, they told me varies horse to horse, worst ones need yearly, but not that many, many average 3 - 5 years. All 3 said same thing.

My vet back east did them for 125 for a power float. She uses a tripod to prop their head on. She isn't very tall so they weren't jacked up. I had all of them done before I left Maryland. So next spring I will have them checked and possibly they will need a float.
