Dax is fat, fattest he's ever been, his back is like a coffee table no kidding, I thought it was just him BUT I brought Ira in today, now he has really filled out this year, his chest is huge, wide, his canon bones are strong and solid, he has shot up in height too, his shoulders are huge, my farrier even commented that he looks like he's on steroids!........his back is like a coffee table too, so I'm having saddle fit issues, here's my question......is it normal when horses get fat that their backs get wide like coffee tables, I'm scared to change saddles then once they lose weight over winter and with me working them they will slim down and I'll have to change saddles again, HELP?!

Yes their backs will get wide as they get fatter. Reno was the same way. He has loss weight and now has a wither. Before he was a mutton wither. And wide!!

Good to hear, I'll just hang onto the saddles I have then and hope they lose weight, I only got Timothy grass hay this year, no alfalfa so fingers crossed they do plus I plan to ride them all winter as long as the is ok and not slippy

yes the backs get like coffee tables and they also get cresty necks. and are prone to laminitis and cushings. soooo that being said. no alfalfa. no apples no carrots as they are high in sugar. and unless it is really cold out and they need to have it. cut way back on their grain. i know you did not ask what to feed as you already know what and what not to give them. i just thought i would put in my 3 cents worth. spinning-pumpkin

You know my horses are weird, they won't eat carrots or apples lol!....I don't feed them grain, I am giving them farriers formula with probiotics added thats it, I'm not big on feeding unless they need it, I'm guessing it's just too much grass then, fibre bellys?......takes so long to lose that weight though, know that myself lol!
