I put my bridle and helmet in my car the other day because a friend wants to try a new bit on her horse so I'll let her try mine before she spends money on a new one. They're in the back seat. So now my car smells like skunk and I think it's because there was a skunk in the tack room last week. The cats eat in there and there's little cat doors to the outside so the skunk came in and ate. It didn't spray anything but the smell apparently got on everything. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to get rid of it? I know when they spray it's an oily substance but if they just hang out is it still oily? I want to bring my saddle home and clean it but what would I use?

I know my dog got skunked...right in the face and chest... Whew did she stink. I found this worked amazingly... I did equal parts of peroxide, Dawn dish-washing liquid {must be original blue}, good shake of, plus a little more of Baking Soda...mix it together. It will froth some. I used a sponge and sponged my dog in the mixture {it was on the thicker side of runny}, rubbed her coat vigorously with my hands for a few minutes and rinsed her clean. Smell was gone... This can be done as many times as you need but for me, thankfully once was enough... Don't know how this could be applied to your saddle though...maybe try a small area... And vinegar in a cup in the car might help remove some of that odor...vinegar seems to absorb all kinds of offensive smells or neutralizes those whiffs of unpleasantness. Good luck...skunk is nasty!!

Nice!
Leave it out in the sun for a long time, that kills anything?!
