That's horrible. I hadn't heard about it but then again I don't have a dog. I hope they find the source soon before too many more pooches are lost.

I purchase dog treats for my dogs and sometimes get the jerky and the puparoni for a few months i have been reading the labels and I am staying away from made in china. taiwan. japan. viet nam products especially with food. and especially with human food such as farm raised fish in taiwan. or over seas. either pay more or do with out. I am with Val on this one. either make my own or just do dog biskets and stay away from those rawhide chews also. disgusting . feeding dried skins to dogs and it could kill them. This reminds me of a few years ago when the canned dog food was killing dogs. and i swear it killed some of my rotties at a young age with cancer and kidney failure. sad

My mom told me about the "issue" with the dog treats...not a word on it did we hear down here, but she lives in NY and heard it.
Sounds like this has been happening for awhile now and again as you wrote.. comes from jerky treats made overseas.
I guess those manufacturers value our dogs just like the babies formula, dog food and so many other contaminated food items... they just don't care.
More reason to buy American products when and if you can find them... and if you can't find them then buy from countries where manufacturing is producing safer merchandise.

I heard about the tainted jerky treats too. I didn't get the name of all of the treats but they're the ones made in China. Suppose it would be on the label. They're made in China (again!): Milo's Kitchen, Del Monte, Waggin' Train, Nestle/Purina. Some major names! That's scary as all get out

I was shopping for some dog treats when a stranger approached me and told me of the danger so I put back the treats I had in my hand and walked over to the hotdogs and got some turkey dogs. My puppies are thanking me My family too. I sliced the leftover dogs and dried them on a cookie sheet at 200 deg until crisp. When cooled I put them in a ziploc baggy. My dogs LOVE them. They are more eager to do a trick then they were with the purchased treats.

That's a good idea farmergal, thanks!
Actually that makes me think of my dehydrator, cauldron I could do some bananas, sweet potatos and carrots for an special treat. candycorn I do that for myself anyway. (Don't worry, I know no grapes).

The consumption of grapes and raisins presents a potential health threat to dogs. Their toxicity to dogs can cause the animal to develop acute renal failure ...
Another treat to dehydrate is beef liver. I boiled till done then cut into bite sized pieces and dried. This needs to be kept in the fridge or freezer as I found it got moldy quickly but my dogs loved them. I took the deer liver and heart, boiled it and ground it up then added it to dry pancake mix and added enough water to make bite sized drop cookies. I baked them till done but still moist. I stored these in the freezer. Despite all the homemade treats I make for training I'm lazy and buy the tiny dog biscuits and give them to my puppies.

I have venison liver and ground venison that was given to me last year. what a great way to use it. wonder if oatmeal and salt and some crisco would work instead of pancake mix with baking powder or soda in it would be better. perhaps harder/ hmm i will try that this weekend. thanks

my dogs aren't fond of oatmeal, don't really know why. They have no problem eating the ground corn n oat cow feed though. I'd make meatloaf with your ingredients. minus the crisco, powder and soda, then slice into strips and dehydrate. I'd boil the liver first then grind or chop into tiny pieces and then add to other ingredients. (save the water your liver cooked in. Never throw anything out that the dogs could eat. Use it in a recipe that calls for water and substitute. I can "see" your dogs begging for this treat.

A friend of mine slices up sweet potatoes/yams and bakes the slices as dog treats. Here's a list of the ones to watch out for. My understanding is that they're all made in China. Lead in kid's toys, dangerous dog treats, what next.

I don't even give them to clients dogs when they bring them, I tell them right away, I'm not feeding your dogs that crap, even the ones with a canadian flag on them are actually from china if you read the small print, grr!
