OK... saddle is for me. I am looking at purchasing a Circle Y Park & Trail Saddle. Don't care about the color or if it has "silver" on it or not.
I need to know how to fit that darn thing. I sat in one yesterday, near brought it home. People there told me I should be able to put 3 fingers between my thigh and the pommel {high thing in the front horn sits atop of?} Is this true???
I came a cross a 15" black tooled on corners and black finished leather padded seat saddle, USED...but so lightly used it is new. Maybe half a dozen rides, the fleece is not even compressed yet. $450 with a credit of $50... so saddle would be $400 plus tax...
I was so tempted but don't know enough about the fit of me in a western... My English saddle is a close contact 17.5"...that is what held me back...I know the 2" rule difference. Could a 1/2" make that much difference???
HELP!!!!!
I will keep looking if a "not a good idea"....

Wht size was the one you sat in? I've been riding western for years now and I still don't really know what size seat I need. I go back and forth between a 15 and a 16. I figure if I am comfy, it's the right size.
I had heard something about the "three finger rule" but everyone likes to fit in a saddle differently. I would imagine gamers would prefer to eb a bit tight in the saddle while others would prefer a looser fit.
Ramble, ramble, ramble and I know none of this is of any help. Find out about the return policy for the 15" but if that is a Circle Y, you should have no problems recooping your money if it doesn't fit. The cheapest I have seen are around $500 and those are used saddles.
Also remember if needs to fit your horse too!

The saddle was a 15". I forgot to ask about the tree width, but looking at it it didn't appear ridiculous.
If the saddle was sat in 5x...that would be a lot. Stirrups not even scuffed nor are they turned. To me. looked like the thing just was unpacked from the manufacturer....
This is one of the first western saddles I've sat in and don't feel like I am being yanked apart. I've been sitting in a lot of saddles lately.... Michaels' saddle is to wide for me to be really comfortable, although part of that is me not having use of my feet because I don't adjust his stirrups...I just balance and ride. I felt comfortable but I also know there is a HUGE difference sitting in a store on a saddle horse and riding a live horse in it..

I've seen lots of these saddles online on Ebay or Amazon and a few other sites. The 15" ones are less money The 16" ones are considerably more money and many times in not such nice condition.
I think the smaller seat size is not in such demand so price reflects that...

Ask if you can bring the saddle home to try on your horse or bring the horse to the saddle. Sounds like a good deal if it fits you both.

I have owned a CY park and trail. Loved it and did put many miles on it. Sold it only due to that it didn't fit JR. Now I'm not a small person. I could ride in a 16in seat but prefer the 17in. I like to have a little room. Especially with trail and mountain riding. You don't want a lot of room but enough that your thighs aren't hitting the pommel. So that is probably the 3 finger rule. I say if you feel comfy sitting on it then go for it. The main thing is it fitting horse. Mine was a wide tree as my paly paint mare was stocky. Reno also wears a wide tree. As MM said see if you can try it on the horse before you buy it. If the horse has a wide wither you may want one with FQHB If not SQHB. If Michael's saddle fits him ok you can measure the gullet on it and see how wide it is. www.western-saddle-guide.com/saddle-gullet.html

All good advice , my saddle is a 15 inch and it is a little big but i prefer the way it fits and it is a no name brand that i have had for 20 years or longer and it has seen it's share of horses backs and dust . i also have a tex tan 15 that is higher in the cantle and i fit in it a little snug. hate the saddle as i feel it tips me forward on to my crotch, and i get sore.
so if the saddle fits and you feel comfortable. see if you can fit the horse. use a pillow case under the saddle and show us how it fits him. and you know he is going to be gaining weight. so do not get one that is too tight on the shoulder or pushing on his withers.

I find the circle ys a bit wide for me, I had one I loved but it gave me a right stretched crotch and they fit wide on the horse too, although I suppose better than too narrow.
I have an older 14 inch that fits like a 15 so honestly I think you have to to just sit and see how you feel, I also have a 15 timberline flex that fits tight but man I love that saddle, so glad it fits all mine as it's flex panel:)
Melanie at rideonsaddlesblog has good deals, you should have a look:)
tell her her you prefer a narrow twist:)
